I've been having a bad time with Viruses lately, one managed to render my hard drive useless and another was causing the Microsoft Office window to popup and try and install something that it could not do... Before one of you smart rectums makes any remarks about it's the sites I'm visiting it is but it's not the sort of site normally associated with viri...Anyway after running AVG Free and getting a nil return a close personal friend and confident (Casual Skirt) said it may not be a virus but spyware and I was directed to this site; http://www.spywareterminator.com/
and downloaded the free version.
STREWTH I WISH I WAS A COMPUTER GEEK....
anyway this "spyware terminator" finds 300 bits of spyware and undesirable stuff enjoying a cosy residence on my hard drive which I had much joy in clicking on the "remove" button and the "immunise" button. Top software, wish I could write software like it....

Now that you have cleaned up the spyware, how to prevent it reinfecting? Does spyware terminator provide an ongoing protection against future spyware attacks? If not, consider programs such as the free Adaware and/or Spybot.
Do you have a firewall which warns you of attempts to infiltrate your computer, or of data being sent out to sites you have not okayed.
Kerio Free Personal Firewall is one with a good reputation. Once you have set up a firewall and given permission for all the sites you usually visit and exchange data with (email, online banking etc) you can forget it and only hear from it if you are installing new software (when it checks with you whether changes being made are OK). Or of course if an unauthorised attempt on your computer's integrity is made.
When I first installed mine, I was surprised to be asked if it was OK for my computer to send data to Microsoft when I opened Media Player or Microsoft Word. Why should Bill Gates know what music I prefer? And what did he do with this info?
If you inadvertently block something that prevents a program running you can undo it in settings, or reset everything and start again.

I'm using the firewall that comes with XP Pro...
Yep I'm also intrigued with Bill Gates wanting to know what exactly is on everyones PC, but "knowledge is power"
Spyware T gives you the option to "censor" all traffic or you can set it on auto. Currently I have it in "learn" mode where I get the option to allow or not and gives pop up control site by site and it seems to know what popup is an ad and what is not.
I'll give it a trial and see what transpires....

Beware some of those spyware programs are spyware themselves and phone home occasionally. Use these two and you wont have any trouble Spypot search and destroy
Adaware 6
Get them here
http://www.download.com/3405-8022-5153545.html

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Any site especially one you download stuff from has the potential to drop nasties on your computer. Its not the site its the stuff on it that causes the trouble. Pm me with the site name and I will look at it for you. I d/load stuff all the time and havent had a virus or spyware for years Use both the above and Nortons 2007 antivirus

Avg Free is worth exactly what u pay for it

Read several reviews on Spyware Terminator here and not all good by a long way Apparently it can also delete stuff it finds as spyware which isnt and u may find things dont work after you have done a clean and delete

Do these allow spy/adware on to your system then delete it or do they prevent it from getting there? Do they stop tracking cookies?
Just curious, I wonder what happens if I ran all 3?
These two Torrent sites seem to be the most troublesome:

http://www.torrentz.com/ and

Torrentspy, now Spyware terminator just poped up a message when I tried to open it, to get the URL, telling me that it is a dangerous site with many "warez" ( please explain) This is the message:
Danger website
was only worthwhile for it's torrent search engine. The site has banned those in the U.S. from using their search engine. Don't click on any links other than the torrents if you can manage to use the engine via a proxy or something. It downloads spywr

So I guess this "spyware Treminator" is doing something, I'll set a restore point ( that I can do) and let it run and see what else happens.

If you use a decent firewall you turn off the windows rubbish and everything works fine.
Have never used it and still dont get viruses or spyware.

Also I dont accept email from any one I dont know and I dont open these useless jokes that people send all over the place.

These have the potential to cause mayhem and I actively discourage them.
Usnig Outlook Express with the preview window open is the quickest way to get a viirus via Email as its open before you can delete it.
Another way viruses get spread is from the jokesters forwarding mail to huge numbers of addresses by using CC that shows every address instead of BCC which hides all the addresses.
This gives nasty people a whole lot more addresses to send malicious mail to.
Be careful Be aware and you will stay clean.
Just my rant for the day but its been successful for several years so must be doing something right even if I do use Nortons.

Its not the program its the users who dont configure it correctly that causes problems

As for Torrentz its a Russian site and they are the worst of all Use Isohunt if u must use torrents

Yes I know that but it may not be a real address as lots of spammers spoof addresses and what you see may not be the real addy.
Most average users wouldnt know that anyway.
Am talking about being careful and not spreading things unecessarily rather than being super careful to that extent.
Just like in a Word Document If you know how to find it you can tell which computer in a network it came from. Nothing is really secret if you have the right tools and knowledge.

have just spent the last few days getting the comp cleaned up. Was running Norton antivirus, didn't seem to dfo to much, I did a scan using another program and found a total of just under 4000 infected files all from Trojans and spyware and key loggers. Buggered if I can understand how they all got on here with up to date anti virus etc.
I went and bought the 2008 trend Micro and she did the trick. Had to scan quite a few times obviously. Then I was talking to a friend the other day and she had the exact same problems and stuff as me only from the keyloggers they managed to take $6000 out of their bank account. (that is why I never leave money in the bank, cause if it isn't someone who has hacked through your computer it is the bank themselves that flog your money)
She also bought the same program I did and told me that if you have Trend Micro you can go to their website and they have a program that is free called housecall and it scans your computer also. It picked up another 3 of spyware. You might have to have a Registered version of Trend for the housecall to scan though?

Cheers
Jo

Oh and the other thing she told me was that alot of what was on her computer, I don't know all the details of how virus' work, but alot of them are able to hide behind Norton and so they aren't detected. Well that was definately true in her case and mine.

This is something I don't compromise on.

Was using Vet Anti-virus and firewall on on PC and AVG freeware on the Laptop, which was OK. I also ran a freeware Firewall program on the Laptop.
I received a renewal notice and upgrade offer from Computer Associates (Vet) for a full Internet Security Suite which was less than the cost of a single user licence alone and came with a three user licence.

Includes Anti-virus, Firewall, Spyware detector and a Spam filter to give full protection from those nasties circulating the net.

I was a bit surprised at the spyware it recommended to delete that was resident on both machines.

I used to run Spybot on occasions but found it interferred with the settings I had previously configured.
