Morning all
Just sitting here eating my toast for breakfast which we use our trusty old wire camp toaster every morning to cook.
I was wondering what other camping items people use at home on a regular basis ? ?

Steve,

I dare say the beads are placed in the frypan and the camp oven is placed on the beads.

If your swag is as good as ours and your bed is just like ours....Id like the idea of getting "into trouble" every night ....the swag is soooooo comfy!!!! LOL !!!!! It puts our bed to shame and its nt a cheap bed!!

The old frypan I have has plastic or bakelite legs. Would I need to take them off because I think the heatbeads would be hotter than electric ? ? ?

Steve,

The frypan is simply used to contain the heatbeads and resulting coals.

I actually use a cast iron skillet I picked up from the local camping store.

Place the heatbeads in the pan and light them.
When burning properly, put the heatbeads on a trivet, or cheap cake rack in the pan and place the camp oven on top. The air underneath the rack stops the beads from being smothered.
Depending on what you are cooking, place more heatbeads on top and wait until the contents have cooked.

As a rule of thumb, the amount of heatbeads to use depends on the size of your camp oven.

Mine is 12 inch diameter so I use 10 beads underneath and 14 beads on top. This is enough to cook a decent sized roast which takes around two hours. No need to add more beads. Also good for a loaf of bread. (about a half hour)

The old electric frypan is a great idea if you are using at home where you can't place the oven, etc. on the ground.

Well, I've been using my small camp oven to bake bread, in the electric stove. I wrote about it just the other day at http://www.southimage.net/wilderness-travel/bakes-bread.php

As a matter of fact, as we speak, today's loaf is rising and nearly ready for the oven. Soon be time to start preheating.

Regards,
Laurie.
