When all you wanna do is rip the road up yourself and fix it remember the roads in other countries...
Mum and Dad have just got from a trip through Bhutan, Sikkim and India....do I need to go on....yep....Here is a part of her email the other week...
"We drove from Thimphu to Phuntsholing which is on the border with India - it was 170km (I think about
Sydney to Nowra) and took 7 hours!!!
The road was a one lane dirt road winding continuosly and above 2500 metres ( I think she said thats about 10,000feet - 2000ft higher than Kos.) so the drop down was immense. The road is apparently a national highway that they are doing repairs on. It was wet, muddy, foggy for about one hour and cars came the other way. No-one drives more than 30km/hour as it is so bad.
There had been landslides and the
cliff edge was very loose. I was so scared. I have never been on a road so dangerous as this for so long. I kept thinking we had just passed the worst when it got worse againi. When it was foggy you couldn't see in front and it was very narrow. Suddenly all we could see was the shape of a bloody cow in front of us.
Anyway, you could imagine our relief when we arrived safely this afternoon.
We have another drive tomorrow to Darjeeling but I think the road will be much better.
I think I will write to the King of Bhutan to complain!!!"
She also said that she would look out the window and couldnt see the edge of the road.....just all the way don to the bttom of the valley....
I guess it hard to imagine what its like but Dad said he thought he was never going to see home again....

Hey KIwi,
Did they pick the new vehicle up for you while they were there did they??
Is that why we have to wait until midweek to see pics LOL

Sounds like one of those roads where if you do go over the side , it's such a long fall your clothes will out of fashion before you hit the bottom.

In Latvia a couple of years ago and could only do 80kph on the motorway due to the pot holes (in a rental car that can go twice as fast over bad roads as any otehr car). That was the good road. Took me 5 hrs to do 200km non-stop - no hills though so it was quite safe, except for the car-hi jackers that tried to hijack my car.
Then there was the secure overnight
parking in compounds if you wanted to see your car again in the morning

My eldest son is in Guatemala, they are smart there, cobblestone roads don't get potholes but they sure shake the bejesus out of your car. Some of the pictures he has sent home are really amazing. A lovely family shot of Mum Dad and 4 kids in a donkey cart carrying pumpkins to market - all (even what looks to be a 6 yo boy) armed with what look to me like the ubitquotis AK47, the weapon of choice for farmers world wide.
