We are travelling from Roxby Downs up the Borefield Track and on to Marree. I believe you can go to the edge of Lake Eyre South from the Oodnadatta Track about 15 kms west of the junction with the Borefield. Is this track signposted and can you access it with a 2WD? Thanks

From memory the Oodnadatta track runs right alongside the lake. Just pull up on the side of the road ;-)

Read the Oodnadatta Track trek notes there is information about the main two access points to the best viewing areas of the Lake from the southern side.

There is a viewing point not far up the track from the intersection with the Borefield Track, quite near the mound springs - have a look at them while you are there. From the viewing area you can drive about 100 metres down to the lake edge but DO NOT drive on the lake bed ! Have a look at the tracks left by others and you will see why! Some of the tracks are very deep and show signs of recovery operations haveing taken place.

Indeed re the 2wd - you won't miss it when driving up to William Creek from Marree etc - but don't expect to be overly impressed - its devoid of features from the ground, glaringly white and usually has a mirage or three - well worth a stop though, but as mentioned stay away from the thin crust on top of the mud.

Hi

Been passed there about 6 times or so last time in May this year there was a big new information bay with signs and info boards i think in fact they moved the road maybe a km or two to the south to keep people from trying to drive on it i might be wrong but there was a large hill and a sign "lake eyre south 15 mtrs below sea level " that gone now and this info bay is there in it place but either way it worth the 15km bypass to have a look and go see "the bubbler "and "blanche cup" why you are there

Whooo!

Mention of the Bubbler and Blanche Cup has stirred my memory.
Wouldn't like to drive along the access road in a 2WD.

Worse piece of road I have driven on. Even the bypass sections are badly corrugated.
