Get a Pilot/escort car that went from Perth to Brisbane/Sydney on a job to tow it , how big is it , and how much would you think is a fair rate .

Thanks Doug and Dusty, idea is good any contacts. I would guess $2-3000 would be fair for a quality job.

How big is the Van?

That would help as to what fuel costs would be and vehicle size needed for towing.

We towed a 34ft van from Sydney to Mandurah and it was a wide load 9ft and that cost return $3600.00.

It was illegal but that was then.
Every state has different laws on wide and long loads.

It might just be me, but i've noticed you have a habit of following up one 'joke' with another of your 'jokes' when nobody finds your first 'joke' funny. I was wondering what may prompt this unusual behaviour?

Come In Borgy.

It's no wonder the crows fly backwards in SA, it's to make sure they are flying away from the crap.

I have found only one person on here from SA that seems a decent person and has a sense of humour and it is a she.

Well done.

Hi Polben

We were also going to purchase a van in eastern states but we were thinking of catching the Indian Pacific and putting our vehicle on as well, having a few days rest going over, then picking up the van and making a holiday of the trip back, this could be an economic way for you if you have the time to spare. LOL

Dave

Train fares for yourself and vehicle can be found at www.railaustralia.com.au/indianPacificFares.php as you will see there are varying levels of fares relating to the comfort you want!! time to go across approx 3 days.

Time to drive back once again depends on how much time you want to spend say above a week and where you want to stop on way back either free sites or caravan sites.

Hi polben

Don't discount driving if you can possibly get a few days off.

We purchased our caravan privately from someone in Bundaberg, and we made a rushed trip there and back. Combined with a Monday holiday, i needed to beg only 4 days leave. We are a bit south of Perth.

Even though it was rushed, we enjoyed the drive, and for us it was all new, being our first trip across the Nullabor and first time touring in the ES. We didn't drive in the dark and still got there in 4 days, stopping in motels and cabins (as the first couple of nights were too wet for sleeping in the swag). We got up early and left at first light. This included a few stops for photos and a lovely drive through the Warrumbungles after i took a wrong turn.

We spent 24 hours with the previous owners before leaving on a slightly different route through Qld, and spending more time on photo stops. We just drove until dark then pulled off the road for the night, again leaving early. We spent a lovely night watching the sun set over the Nullabor cliffs against a stormy sky.

You may have been to these states and places before, but to us it was a Grey Nomad adventure.

Hi Motherhen sounds great so to get an idea of time on the road we are north of Perth (Geraldton) but going to Brisbane for our van and you were south of Perth and going to Bundaberg so should work out about the same. How many days actually travelling each way?

By the way thanks to all who contributed to this thread much appreciated good info.

Hi polben

Geraldton adds quite a bit to your journey, but just so you can work out kms and travelling times, i have just dug out my diary, which i couldn't find last night. As i said, even travelling long days, we did enjoy the scenery and the places we saw, although with around 1 state a day it was a bit like the old Ronnie Barker movie title "If this is Thursday it must be Belgium".

Day 1 with a normal pack up after breakfast start, Lake Grace by lunchtime, then directly east through Lake King and the Frank Hann NP to Norseman, where we hit an enormous thunder storm and it bucketed down. Driving was difficult in heavy rain, so at 5 pm we got to Balladonia and gave up on sleeping in the swag. Took an expensive (for us) motel room and had instant soup!

Day 2 Our first Nullabor crossing, so drove into cliff lookouts for a walk and photos while is still rained. Got to Minippa by dark and drizzle and found a motel room.

Day 3 Left early, and stopped for the night at Cobar

Day 4 Had an interesting day through scenic hills with irrigated country growing a variety of crops on rich black soil. Day included my wrong turn out of Gilgandra and hence lovely detour through the Warrumbungles. Stopped at Dalby

Day 5 Got to Bundaberg mid morning and stayed (sleeping in our new 'home') with people we were buying from

Day 6 left mid morning for return run, this time travelling slower and stopping to walk around and take photos as we went. We still got early starts to the day. Stopped in bush near Moonie

Day 7 Went west to Cunnamulla, then south, stopping not far into NSW.

Day 8 Went to Bourke, along the Darling to Wilcania, then to Broken Hill. Stopped when we got past Broken Hill.

Day 9 Found a gravel pit near Wudinna for overnight

Day 10 Shopped at Ceduna, and went to the Thevenard (wharf area). Stopped near the cliffs of the Bight.

Day 11 To and through Norseman and stopped by a salt lake soon after turning onto the Norseman Lake King Road

Day 12 Home

Starting out on a Saturday, it took us 2 weekends, returning on Wednesday of the second week (which had a Monday Public Holiday). You would need an extra day each way to and from Geraldton, but work out your kilometres. Adding all that up, looks like you would need 2 weeks leave to be on the safe side.

My husband did most of the driving, with me doing a shift after lunch so he could have a cat nap.

It was our 'holiday' trip of that year.

Hi Polben
Geraldton will not necessarily add a whole day, Kalgoorlie/Boulder is an easy 9 hours from Geraldton via inland through Merredin so you could easily make Norseman from Gero in a day. You are then not that far behind. There are other ways to get through from Geraldton, you do not go through the big smoke

All the same David, Geraldton adds quite a bit of distance for polben compared to us - we are only about 600 k from Norseman.

Hi Polben, maybe you could contact some of the local truckies that drive east - west and see if they will do a cheap backload for you. You may have to wait awhile, but if your not in a rush it may be the way to go.
I too live in the best part of Aussie like you so I know a couple of locals that I could put you in touch with.

Charlie.
