As advised I called a "Strut Re-Gas" agent who on the NSW central coast is "Strutman". They are on the internet.
He came today and fitted 2 new struts for $165. (2x$40plus $70 labour plus GST)
Details 830MM 10MM shaft 750Newtons.(50 for good measure)
The key word here is "fitted"
Camper trailer struts and Poptop struts are not fully extended when fitted so a jig is needed to compress them to the correct length. At 700 newtons force the effort needed to compress the struts is very high.
I am a pretty strong person, but no way could I fit them without building a tool, so his $70 fitting fee was IMHO
well earned.
The old camper is just like a newie now.
And thanks again for all the replies
Regards Philip A

Good to see you got the problem solved.
Struts are not complicated, but there are a few tricks :o)

Hi Philip
Did the old struts have resistants left in them or did they just fade a bit.
Scoof.. :-)

The worse strut had oil on the outside and had no pressure at all.
I could move the pivots around and was able to pull it off easily.
The Strutman measured the Newtons of the second at 300N ie less than half of the original amount.

Phillip
I have a tongue and groove flooring clamp/vice, with adjustable pins, and length, anything from 100 mm to about 1 metre.
Now the hardest bit is to get everything to line up, and that's that !
Single person job, 5 - 10 minutes
Mind you before I had worked it out,, there was a lot of swearing, sweat, and dummy spits,,
Gotta love it
Cheers Mate
