Information

This is Adelaide's beach side resort suburb, and it was also the beachhead for the establishment of the colony of South Australia, in the early 1800's. Adelaides only Tram service begins in the City and terminates at Glenelg .
As South Australia's first mainland settlement, Glenelg holds a special place in South Australia's history. The Old Gum Tree in Glenelg was chosen by Governor Hindmarsh as a backdrop against which he read the proclamation that formally established the new province of South Australia on 28 December 1836. Every year South Australia celebrates Proclamation Day with a re-enactment of this reading at the Old Gum Tree.
