I have read previous threds so know all the home made remedys of Real Estate Agents Signs and XXXX beer cartons and the Obe window protector etc........BUT has any one tried "Optically clear security film" on the rear window, I know that the window might still get stone chips or cracked, but at least you could finish your trip and get the window replaced when you get home.......Just a thought

But the idea is to protect the window glass so you don't need to replace the window.

When I broke mine, replacement cost was $1500 for the larger window and $540 for the smaller one.
Fortunately, the vehicle insurance covered the cost at no extra expense to me.

The window tint film on the rear window helped hold the glass to a certain extent, but the glass was "opaque" due to the way safety glass "crazes up" so you couldn't see out of it.
I reinforced the bleep tered glass with beer carton cardboard and duct tape both inside and out to support the window until I got home. (It happened on the Birdsville Track)

After getting the window replaced the first thing I did was to purchase a rear window saver from Obie's Outback.
Bugger stuffing about with a "home made" invention for me.
The $225 (delivered) I invested to protect both rear windows (large and small door) has well and truly paid for itself over and over and it's still as practical as the first day I installed it.

The "stone" that caused the damage was still embedded in the glass and was half the size of my small finger nail.
Oh, and the trailer was "sporting" a stone guard on the A-frame too. The stone must have ricocheted off the framework.

I install the rear window saver whenever I take the camper trailer, or off-road trailer, on a trip.

PS..
Prior to fitting the stick-on film, I had tried perspex sheets attached with suction cups.. worked OK, but some of the suction cups would "let go" periodically, so had to keep an eye on 'em...
Biggest PITA (for me) was the dust getting between perspex & glass w/- PITA cleaning issues (I like to be able to see out the back)...

With the light-skinz film, this problem is eliminated, and wiper operation is not affected...

G'day Baz,
2m x 600mm of the light-skinz film was near enough to $200.00.. (coupla yrs ago, so can't remember exactly)...
This was more than enough for both GU Patrol rear windows, w/- enough left over to cover the large window again, not that I expect to have to do that any time soon;-)

The helpful young fella at Repco ordered in in for me, & said that they'll cut it to any size you want, so on that basis, one should be able to do most 4wd (rear) windows for $150.00 or less..

Regards, Ed

What about using corflute - that plastic corrugated cardboard replacement.

There will be stacks of second hand bits available this Sunday ...
