Have just read a test of 3 so called tough trucks in one of the best selling 4WD mags. The Hummer thing, the Jeep Rubicon &
the retro rocket 76 Series Tojo Wagon. Without going into the
results in detail I found several things interesting. All had max
diff locks, 2 in Tojo & Jeep, rear in Hummer.
1. Fuel consumption on test...76 scored 17 L/100k, diesel of course, Hummer...25.5 & Jeep...27!!!. No prizes for 2nd & 3rd
is there ?
2. Towing Capacity...76 is 3500kg, Jeep only 2300 & Hummer
only 1360kg. Can you believe that ?
3.New V Old...only thing new about 76 is that donk, rest is old
& simple, no airbags, ABS. EBD, ancient dash, poor seats etc.
Other two have all the modern gizmos, one is 6 speed.
My conclusion...the 76 eats them both for my money.
What do you think ? Seems 20 odd years of R&D has not added
anything to the offroad ability of the modern 4by wagon, except
that apparently excellent V8 Diesel donk......oldbaz.

I have concluded ages ago that decent piece of hardware if used properly beat to the death *ANY* electronic gizmos. Catch here “used properly”. Waist majority of buyers does not like to study anything, but rather like to use. Thus for them automatic gizmos *IS* better. It does not mean that all of them will venture off road, but if they did they would be better of with automatic transmission, traction control, decent control etc., etc. rather then with diff-locks, because they even do not understand what they for.
Sound like betrayal to real off-road enthusiasts? Yep, but I learn to live with this fact – there are much more idiots around and they have much more money then we do. Thus manufactures will do what suit for them, not what we need. Sad, but true.
Cheers

Hi Serg, generally agree. I must admit to being a convert to auto
boxes on 4wd after hiring an auto Prado Diesel a couple of years back, just magic. Since bought an Auto V6 Jack & found it fine
for outback touring & towing...oldbaz.

The problem is that they are designed for different markets. The LC is designed to be abused by the mines, govt etc. The Hummer and Jeep are more for 'normal' driver/owners.

I'm sure Toyota has worked out what their majority customer wants, ie no frills, tough as nails, and has done the minimum to achieve it.

Besides, realistically how many Hummers and Jeeps will see the outback? And both GM and Jeep know this too.

Hummer with a towing capacity of 1360kg, now that's pathetic. My Suzi GV is even better then that.

Just rechecked that Hummer towing capacity..says 1360 kg,
May be a misprint, seems strange...oldbaz.

I strongly believe the more things that are built into cars the more things that can go wrong. Ask any BMW owner who knows.! In reality you want reliability and effective transport. Toyota lives and breathes that, especially in the new 76. As for the seats I put some new Recaros in my Hilux and they have been the best investment, you always have that option. Can't you get Airbags and ABS..? I see these as important as they are nowdays minimal safety requirements.

Im summary if you wanted to travel Australia and cross some of the roughest terrain and wanted to come back unscathed, what are the brand names that you'll see in the Outback..?

I dont believe that airbags are an option. The old dash layout was
not designed for them. Not sure about ABS. I dont think the
Trayback or Troopie has them either...oldbaz.

Beats me mate, the thing is described as the 76 series in the mag.
In the list of all 4wd in the back of the mag no 70 series is listed,
are they superseded maybe.?...oldbaz.

"70series" has described and LandCruiser of the 7* varieties.

Specifically:
76series is the 5 door wagon
78series is the Troopcarrier
79series is the traytop

As Phil says the term 70 series is generic to all the "7" series range.
Toyota market the current 76, 78 and 79 and the "New" 70 series vehicles.

Look here at the heading on top of the page Toyota Landcruiser 76

Look here for Toyota Landcruiser 78

And here for the 79 Series

Remember

- the Hummer on sale in Australia thru Holden - the H3 is to the REAL H1 or H2 Hummer what the Road going pajero is to the Paris Dakar winning trucks.

They are aimed at Wannabe gangsters and Chapel st tossers.. all will end up with 30inch rims with rubber bands on them

Aw, come on Bruce, you are telling fibs.

The Hummer is distributed by a separate Hummer Dealership.
In Adelaide it is Metro Hummer.
No direct tie-up with, or involvement by, the Holden Dealer Network, more's the pity.

And, I drove one last night (see separate Post) and I'm impressed.

Interesting comparo ... but I would suggest 17l/100 in the Tojo is far from spectacular.

what i find amazing is that you obviously think 17l/100 is good? with the wagon only having 80 something litres thats not going to get any real 4wder anywhere. considering im getin 14l/100 with my trailer in tow behind my Patrol. and the 76 series has just as much electronics to go wrong. i think they are all made for posers.

I only find 17L good as opposed to the other two, keeping in mind that these figures were obtained in supposedly extreme
4Wd conditions, & I dont imagine the testers were interested in
fuel use at all as no mention is made of it in the actual comparo,
only in the statistics. I cant see any poser appeal in the very
basic 76 wagon ....oldbaz.

From the article, in the end the Jeep won and at $14Ks cheaper than the other two. And it will probably be available with a diesel at some stage, I think Toyota just live on there name, and bleep can't those Troop's sure rust hahaha.

Filled up my new 76 other day and got 11.1 Ltrs/ 100k’s and that’s filling it to the bream. I reckon if I take it a little easier I could get it under 11’s not a problem. Also got 656k’s prior to filling and that’s not even the low fuel warning light going on so another 50k’s out of the tank can be achieved, so 700k’s out of the 90ltr tank not bad at all and I’m happy.

Cheers and all the best,

Just Curious

At 700k's out of 90lt that will give you 12.85lt/100, you would need to do 810km to acheive 11.1lt/100 out of the 90lt tank.

So how did who arrive at the 11.1lt mark.

I'm interested as I have a petrol and I'm thinking of going diesel but unless it's a lot better I would'nt be able to justify the exrta cost.

Cheers David

wilst people are banging on about the new toyota v8 how good & economical it is. from memory the hummer only comes out with a 3.7 litre v6 & the jeep another 3.7 litre v6 PETROL of course its gonna perform better, its a bigger engine.
honestly a rather stupid test to compeare engines to it
