Interested to hear from any members who have already gone from CDMA to Next G, and what they are using and their effectiveness. So many disapointing reports around. I was waiting for this new beaut Telstra country phone with extendable aerial, but have had bad reports about them. 12 months ago I went
Newcastle to
Adelaide and back (via B/
Hill) and had CDMA service all the way, but a few weeks back there were long stretches of none.

Fred, I had to change recently after running over cdma & stuffing it. Got a Samsung A412 & more than happy with it so far. Appears
to work as
well as cdma even without car kit. Believe one is available if required. It is supposed to be superior in poor reception
areas...blue tick model. So far so good....oldbaz.

Alll the way...... C'mon Fred...were you watching the bloody phone instead of the road ,
I too have travelled the Barrier Hwy many times and there was always some sections without CDMA service, even with a roof mounted antenna.Don't believe all the stories you will hear , just go and get a good phone from Telstra , Samsung or LG with Bluetooth set up , Don't worry about antennas , you won't need one , I get service on my Next G in most
places I go, also Wireless internet, I don't see the need for people to have 100% phone service 100% of time, Didn't have it 20 years ago and we survived ,

Doug, 20 years ago we didn't have most of the electronics a lot of people out there carry, like GPS, Bluetooth, wireless internet etc. and we survived. I lived as a kid, on old Mt. Doreen station (now abandoned) west of Alice in the 1950's, and there was very limited electronic communications, but we certainly survived. Fortunately progress has come a long way, and we have many electronic aids available to us, which a lot of people seem to have to have. I don't apart from my mobile and 2way, but I would like my mobile to perform to the service providers boasted capabilities.
Just on CDMA again, we have a block at Coonabarabran, 20 k's up the Newell, and 8 k's from a mobile phone tower. 12 months ago we had great CDMA service (the only service we could get there) but now are lucky to get 1 bar, with drop out out most calls.

Give it time mate, turning a system off and building up another is not like waving a magic wand ,

Doug is right. go for the LG 550
We did a 16K round trip to WA from thr GC and almost every day we were able to use Next G internet and mobile phone. The only leg of the trip with no service was east of Cooper Pedy to
Windorah QLD.
However we did find the Antenna made some difference to reception.
Next G service will only improve in time. My information is that telstra are building 300 towers in VIC alone.

best thing is is that something bad can only get better....

Hi Fred
Where we live here in SA, like the rest of Australia, there has been a real problem when Telstra introduced Next G. I have had a prepaid CDMA and was sitting on the fence like thousands of Australians.
I work in an electrical
shop and have personally given our Telstra rep a serve in the past about the phone coverage in our area. To their word, Telstra have fixed many of the problems with Next G and it is working as
well, if not better than CDMA in the
Clare area.
I purchased the Samsung A411 pre paid (Same as the A412 on Contract). Do not go with the Telstra phone, we have had far to many problems with them and the LG or the Samsung have had very goods reports, with no problems.
The only reason why I went for the Samsung, was a friend had a few friends over, and as usual the phone topic came out. Where the people were living, west of
Clare is a very bad phone reception area and the Samsung had the best phone coverage, so I now use this as an example.
If you are pre paid, don't buy one until after the 3rd of December, (inside information) as they are going to drop by $50 with a selling price of $199
Cheers
Stephen

Thanks for the info Stephen. Your suggestion sounds good to me. Maybe the service will settle down once CDMA has closed and next G takes over completely. Lets hope so, anyway.
Cheers from Fred.

Dunno where these people that suggest next G has aywhere near the range of CDMA are getting it from - but having used both I can assure you Next G isnt even on the same page regards coveradge (It seems CDMA is being phased out already which may bring it closer in reception capability)

You must have a strange definition of "service all the way" - there are still plenty of gaps with no base stations today.
And there are no signs that they've converted CDMA basestations to NextG.

G'Day Fred,
Like most things, you won't get the full benefit of NextG for the next few years.
A bought a Samsung A411 from Australia Post
shop for $199 pre paid.
Have had it next to my Nokia CDMA for the past week and service always the same or better.
When CDMA shuts will turn this into a post paid and then wait 12 months for better phones to come on the market. That way not tied into a contract.
If they can get it right, the Telstra 165 looks to be the most promising
Regards
Rolande

I'm with Fred, for the last few years we have travelled
Sydney to
Port Augusta each year on our way to the centre and the CDMA coverage was great with only small gaps between towns.
This year it was off more than on from Dubbo out and coming back in through Camerons corner into nsw it didn't work till
Nyngan.
We quite often go nth from
Sydney up it the mid nth coast and hunter regions and have found that even on the f3 coverge was lost on the cdma where we previously had continuous service, also along the back of
Stockton heading for
Nelson's bay it dropped in an out.
So when the Nokia 6120 came out I finally relented and changed over to next g. So far it has worked
well, no car kit just the phone itself and it seems to always have phone coverage in some surprising locations too. Sometimes the internet won't work but otherwise it has been great.

Thanks for your response Peter. Good to hear from someone else who knows where I'm coming from. Up until the last six months I had never had a missed call or one that went to message bank on my electronic work leash on that highway, or on our property at Coonabarabran, which was why we went CDMA in the first place. My point, which was missed by some respondants,(straight through to the keeper), is that I am still paying for a service that does not deliver anymore, and since we are this close to CDMA closing, I wanted to get some feedback from members who have changed over, and their experience with their new Next G. handsets. Yes mate there are many dead spots around the Hunter, including one from not long after the F3 turnoff to almost Cessnock. No doubt all that will change in time, but in the meantime Telstra wants us to part with more of our hard earned to by changing over early. Anyway lashed out on a LG TU500 today, and off to
Melbourne on Wednesday to pick up the new Jayco, so we'll see how it goes.
Nice rig there Peter.
Cheers from Fred in the Hunter.

Fred
I've not been away out west or south of about Yass since getting the Nokia on next g.
Will be interested to see how it goes further south.
As I said
mine has worked
well all the way down to Goulborn and out Bungonia way. Had good coverage out in the bush where the CDMA was always patchy.
When going up the f3 and then up into Chichester, across to
Gloucester the back way it has worked all the way as
well as up and down the coast to Port Macquarie, out to Port Stephens and Nelsons Bay without losing signal as
well as
Stockton where the CDMA had stopped working so has been good. I've just got it stuck on the windscreen with velcro and use a Supertooth bluetooth handsfree which can be moved from car to car easily.
Bit of a hoot having internet access when out
camping! They gave me free access for 3 months as an incentive.

Internet access is the next thing I have to get to keep the bride happy on the road. (she has an ebay
shop for antique dolls and stuff). I'll keep an eye on service down the highway to Melb. and back and see how next G stacks up as of now. Give us a bell when you have tried the internet bit, and let us know what you used. (We are a bit technology handicapped, age wise, and need to take all this new stuff on board slowly). I'll have to look into this bluetooth stuff.
Technology is moving at such speed, but at our age we can't afford to slow down, or we'll get stampeded.

From what Ive seenwhere Next G falls flat on its face is anything other than line of site.
yea its OK on the fllat and ok on hilltops (somwher) beteen normal gsm and cdma but any low point even with nearby towers will knock it flat where CDMA did much better.
I find next G gets patchy around 10km from the nearst tower n only slightly undulating land eg weatbelt.
Last night I couldnt hold a call 5 mn out of kalamunda on the Weir road - thats very much suburbia

Exactly what I'm talking about Davoe. These blokes flapping their gums about all their toys, haven't experienced what I'm tryng to tell them. We are not getting what we paid for anymore, (maybe they are so cashed up they don't give a shi####t) no matter how soon the new service comes into play, we paid for a service we no longer get. They'd all be pretty bleep if the local Toyota (example only) agent suddenly said, sorry, the new model is due soon, I don't want to know about your current problems. I don't have unlimited funds, and when I read your problems with this service, I only get crankier. I guess only time will tell, we are at the mercy of the service providors, but down the track maybe we will get our chance to have our say.
We are getting some rain here, hope it's not to dry out there.
Cheers and beers from Fred.
