Hello everyone - a bit of info for you to be aware of! This warning was issued by the ATO on 15th October 2007.

"The Tax Office is warning people about a fraudulent email being circulated that claims to offer a refund from the Tax Office.

The email is similar to a scam from June and fraudulently uses the Tax Office logo and the words ‘Australian Taxation Office – Notification’ or ‘Australian Taxation Office – Please Read This’ in the subject line (there may also be variations to these titles).

Acting Tax Commissioner Greg Farr said anyone who receives the email should delete it immediately.

The email asks people to click on a link which redirects them to a bogus website that looks similar to the Tax Office website and asks for credit card and personal details in order to receive a refund.

The email and website are not affiliated with the Tax Office in any way.

“With the 31 October deadline for tax returns approaching, people should be particularly wary of any unsolicited emails claiming to be from the Tax Office,” Mr Farr said.

“The Tax Office will never send an email to people asking them to provide personal information or credit card details.”

The Tax Office has notified relevant authorities who are investigating.

As an extra precaution people should type internet addresses directly into their internet browser rather than clicking on hyperlinks embedded in emails.

People who have entered their credit card information through this email should contact their credit card provider immediately and report a possible compromise."

Be aware!

Yep, can't be too careful out there in the Internet Badlands!

Saw a new name coined the other day. We have had the term "phishing" for a while. Now it seems that many phishing attacks are targetted at particular users or groups of users (such as this one about the Tax Office) so the term "spear phishing" is being used.

Love it!

And let's face it, we all know that the Tax Office just take, not give.

Oh, and how about phone calls?!?
Today someone call me on mobile and say they from Optus (I am Optus customer) and they have great offer for me. I said, fine go ahead. Then they asked me about my address. I replied – why do you need to know one if you sending me your bills and they been paid each end every month; just look at your computer. They hung up without saying anything!!!! Such a scams.
Just remember – when someone initiate conversation (e-mail, phone whatever) with you they have to know who are you, what is your address and credit card number. Banks *NEVER* going to ask your credit card number – they already know it! It is lots of rubbish on Internet and over phones nowadays, so be careful.
But this one with ATO is really good one – sure they catch a lot of innocent idiots!
Cheers

A dick mate recently responded to a phishing email for his Hotmail account. Asked him to put in his password, which he stupidly did. Shortly after, all the people in his address book received an email purporting to come from him, saying he was working in Africa, had all his money and passport stolen, and could they send X thousand dollars over till he can pay them back. Only found out about it when someone rang him. Now he can't access his account.
Some people.....
