A Hummer 3 (with numberplate to match) was parked in the main street this morning. I gave it a cursory glance as I drove past and couldn't believe my eye when I saw that it had leaf springs on the rear axle.

Talk about Retro...............................

My brother, who is a copper at a one man police station in Vic, told me that Vic Police are trialing them as a replacment to their current 4x4's. They have gone to the Pajeros in the past couple of years away from the Nissans and Landcruisers. He was picking his new Paj up last weekend and they had a H3 fully fitted out to head to a one man-er somewhere in the Victorian Mountains. It'll be interesting to see what they think? As to the rear spring setup, perhaps that's why they aren't so bad on the hip pocket?

Yes, I noticed that on the one I had home for a day.

The handling (on bitumen) was still very impressive though.

Nothing retro about rear leaf springs...........they are state of the art on the latest 76/78/79series Toyotas.

I thought you only find rear coils on the softroaders :-)))

Coils for girls he??

My UNIMOG has coils front and rear.. Girls truck?? I don't think so.

Put it in front of a LC or Patrol, and see who moves over first!!!

Coils are great, never broken one yet. (yes, i know that they do break, just a lot less often than them leaves)

Was on my way to Jamestown to collect 2 x rainwater tanks. 2 trips. Hadn't used the Datto for a week before that. So there you go, smart arse....lol

Look, leaf is OK on an old pusbucket like yours but on a U beaut new fangdangle Hummer...more like a bummer.

come on, be honest - you want one :)

The leaf spring thing is just an attempt to rationalise why you shouldn't get one :)

Anyone else seen Roothie driving the H3 in the latest 4wdAction DVD?
He reckoned it was ok except for the small fuel tank.

For the price, which is the same as the new 76 series landcruiser ,I would take the Landcruiser.
Im afraid the ridiculously small windows and American design tastes turn me right off.

It will be interesting to see the resale value on these;)
Somehow I think the cheesy looks will look even worse in a few years

Rear leafs to match the torsion bar front end, possibly the worst combination of springs currently fitted to any 4x4.
When you turned & stared Willem the maufacturers succeeded in their # 1 purpose in designing the Hummer. To stand out in a crowd whilst driving through town. It's plain to see any 4x4 ability, economy, ride, driver position, range or load carrying was secondry in their minds.
Cheers Craig.............

Queensland prisons bought some H1 Hummers and all they did was breakdown, must be hard work driving round the outside of prisons on all that dirt and graded roads.

Corrective Services has bought a prototype protective personnel vehicle to replace the
inoperable Hummer vehicles. This is an armour plated armed vehicle that will patrol prison
perimeters to lessen the chances even further of a prison escape. After successful thorough testing
in May, we will buy additional vehicles to provide added security at all of the government run
secure prisons in Queensland.

This is from a Qld gov report.

I SEEN the ex prison Hummers lined for sale as SCRAP, this is not what I heard, They could not be sold to general public for on road use.
Prison guards went on stike to get them, once they got them they kept breaking down, it all became a huge white elephant, now they are driving troopy again.
This is not hear say, it was on the news about the Government spending close to $200K a pop on an item that went to scrap.
Newspaper don't lie? If the hummers where are they now?

The paragraph starting with Corrective services and then going on to say "inoperable Hummer vehicles" is straight from a government report not a newspaper. Series 1 and 2 landrovers also served in some of the worst situations on the planet but that doesn't mean they didn't breakdown alot and I should know having owned 1 series1 and 2 series 2s. I must have been a dipstick for owning more than 1.

Believe it or don't I don't care

I neither have to believe you , your paper or get over it.

My point , you say a vehicle that has served all over the world under the worst conditions cant patrol a prison. Yes they may have had issues but me and you will never know why. Maintenance ? god knows . You are telling me a story that you read about , Great thank you for telling me what you read about . I chose not to believe me it.

Dont tell me what to think and I have nothing to get over.

To enlighten you a little on the Queensland Corrective Services Hummers here goes.
First of all they started life as the civilian version of a Humvee, a Hummer or H1 if you prefer. Most civvie Hummers imported into Australia are of 1996 or 97 vintage as they were purchased back then as a bulk lot. Some were not registered for several years after importataion due to slow sales.
The RHD conversion kit used to convert the QCS Hummers does have issues especially in the steering dept, asomething that most engineers and DOTARS are aware of. The company that supplied the conversion are no longer in existance although you can still get compnents from another company which obtained what was left.
The QCS Hummers would have had all the civilian 'accessories' and trim which makes them a lot heavier than the original Humvee.
They were further loaded with body armour and other equipment which probably took them close to if not over GVM. I have no more exact knowledge but apparently when in use by the QCS they were driven very hard, jumped and generally abused, (the guards probably thought they were driving tanks!) which combined with the previously mentioned RHD conversion problems led to steering failures and a subsequent withdrawal from use. There were also apparently legal manouverings between QCS and the suppliers which eventually resulted in the VIN's on all the vehicles being rescinded and the remains marked 'never to be re-registered' .
Just another case of a govt dept trying to make something on the cheap to do a job they were never designed for and subsequently bagging the 'product' as being the scapegoat. The ones who made the decision to buy never get to wear the fallout.
Most of the QCS Hummers have ended up being used for parts as despite trying to sell them buyers dissappear when they find out they can't register them.
Take it from me a Humvee like mine is vastly different to a civilian Hummer or H1. H2's 3's etc are nothing but pretenders. Like most of the soft roaders masquerading as 4wd's these days.

Rock Ape

I knew a guard who used to drive the H1's at a prison in Qld

The armour plating was apparently so thick that the vehicles were useless on all but flat ground

They hated them, but it was because they had been modified and made so heavy, not because they were a 'bad vehicle'

Sydney Morning Herald motoring guide yesterday dismissed the
Hummer H3 as painfully slow, gutless engine that slurps fuel,
poorest vision in a 4by. Not BIG at all, shorter & lower than A Prado, just wider. Pathetic Towing ability...1360 Kh for manual,
"Due to clutch durability when launching on a grade" Hummer
spokesman said. Honda CRV will tow more!!! Undertorqued & underpowered, takes days to get to highway cruising speed.
Braking performance..only just acceptable. Little storage space.
After all that people are falling over themselves to get into one,
waiting list well into 2008.
Leave me off the list, old Jack will last another 10 years anyway.
cheers...oldbaz.

The H1 is the only hummer which is not laughable. I agree with leafs, they suck off road but are far better at carrying weight. I reocn my current rear springs are better off road than my old car with leafs with locker. The H2 and H3 are jokes and to take them seriosuly is admit the americans are on to something with big flash low quality expensive fuel guzzling vehicles. Its all utter bull chit.

I heard that if a hummer does not have a minimum of 5 people staring at it at all times its paint starts to fade and the chrome falls off the wheels.
