Hi all,
I'm planning a trip from around Tweed Heads back down to Sydney from Christmas to New Years Eve. The Treks on the site are a bit light-on for this region, so a question to the wiser masses.

We're wanting to visit and stay in Parks / Forests in the hinterland as much as possible to avoid the heat. Would consider extraordinary locations closer to the sea. Likely best to nip to a highway for longer gaps in between. I'm struggling to find any suggested routes or priorities to string the parks together.

In terms of level of difficulty, we'll be travelling in full size 4WDs aiming to enjoy as much a challenging drive as the scenery, but we'd rather slip down a cheeky red than slip down a rock-face.

Any pointers or links to maps, notes much appreciated.

Cheers,

Tim

timglobal,

There is a book called Explore Australia by Four Wheel Drive (dont know if it is still available) that covers Sydney to Brisbane by the back roads.

I know you want to do this in reverse, so you will need to plot this in reverse, so here is what they suggest.

Sydney to Freemans Waterhole, Kurri Kurri, Raymond Terrace, Booral to Gloucester,

then Cundle Flat, Dingo Tops NP, Maxwells Flat, Oxley Highway to Yarras, Mt Wilson Reserve, Wild Bull Camping area, Rollands Plains, Kippara State Forest to Kempsey,

then Cedar Park Reserve, Bowraville, Bellingen, Nanna Glen, Corrindi Beach then Pacific Hwy to Grafton,

then, to Whiporie, Pikapine, Mallanganee, Toonumba Dam, Kyogale, Cawongla, Mebbin Forest, Tyalgum and Murwillumbah.

There are various camping spots mentioned in the book and whether they are all still open, I dont know. There may even be more open by now as this book is quite a few years old.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Cruiser

Thanks Cruiser,

A great start-point. I'll try and find a stockist of the book, otherwise make my own up from those waypoints.

Cheers,

It would help if you could tell everyone which hinterland you want to explore. I can only assume it is the Tweed and Far Nth NSW area.

If you are intending to tour the Tweed/ border area toward the New England then I suggest you have a look at Dirty Weekends in South Queensland. It has a variety of treks around the border region, including the Border Ranges National Park as well as some properties that allow camping and 4WDing in and around Nth NSW.
