Just a FYI forum.
A few weeks ago I got bored and decided to cut and polish some scrathes off the side of my GQ 96 Patrol. When I stood back to admire my work there were very obvious white streaks. It wasn't until I did this that I reliased how bad my paint was (I guess it is 12 years old now!).
Anyway it's taken 2 weeks but now the whole car has been cut and polished. I couldn't believe the before and after as I was half way through a panel.
Anyway just a quick forum to say that if you have an old car and take some pride in the way it looks as well as performs then it's worth the effort.
I did it the traditional way with a cloth and one finger as I hate the swirls you get with buffing machines. Takes a lot longer but a better result.

I use the roll on auto skin to protect the duco on the outback trips but after a big trip in the dust, I take it to a specialty detailer who cleans 4x4's. They blow out the vents, clean the inside of the door panels of red dust etc and polish it up nicely. Makes a huge difference to keeping the vehicle clean for every-day use (No clouds of dust blowing out vents, no red mud leaking from door panels, sills etc). Worth the bucks.

Mick.

Hi Mick, Just as a matter of interest how much do they charge for a detail like that and where do you get it done ?

Forgot to mention the Nissan is still full of dust and has scratches from the Canning earlier in the year.

Same same GT. It was $380 but that was two days work, steam cleaned underneath, took the roof rack off and polished the roof, cleaned the awning, took the wheels off, polished the alloys, motor, interior cleaned all the canvas bits (seat and wheel covers, carpets and seats etc etc. Even went over all the cargo barriers, and pulled out the blackwidow draws to clean and dry lube the roller bearings. A very comprehensive and thorough going over. A heap of work. Mob that did it was in Ringwood (eastern suburbs of Melbourne) and I've heard of another specialist in Sydney as well. Have you tried the PVC duco protector. It works a treat especially in the rough stuff.

How do you buy PVC duco protector and how does it stay on?

Grant,
I got mine from Opposite lock. Here is the auto skin website. I just applied two coats initially. A bit peeled off during heavy rain in the Flinders so I reapplied and touched up areas of heavy wear. At the end of the trip a half hour at the high pressure hose car wash and it's off. Damn good investment. Did a great job at protecting the Patrol over 14000km thru the deserts this year.

Cheers. Mick

cleaning the vents etc is an excellent idea! I did the Simpson about 5 months ago with a bunch of motor bike riders and heading back again in June. With all these trips the car has done I can actually smell the dirt in the vents when I have th fan on :(
