CDMA network to stay under coverage clause
7th December 2007, 10:15 WST

The new Federal Government has reaffirmed it will not let Telstra switch off the CDMA mobile network until it is certain the replacement Next G network is up to scratch.

Telstra is planning to shut down CDMA on January 28, claiming Next G provides better coverage.

However, in September the former Coalition Government varied Telstra's licensing conditions so that it cannot switch off CDMA until the government is satisfied with the new network's coverage.

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy will base his decision on an independent audit of Next G's coverage by the Australian Communications and Media Authority, to be delivered in early January.

A spokeswoman for Senator Conroy today said the new licensing condition "still stands".

"Stephen's position has always been that we will hold Telstra to their fairly big promises that they wouldn't switch off (CDMA) until Next G could provide the equivalent service," she said.

Senator Conroy's assurance came after independent MP Tony Windsor called for clarification of the new government's position.

Mr Windsor said many people in his northern NSW electorate of New England had received a letter from Telstra which says: "If you do not upgrade before January 28 you risk losing your current mobile number."

"Communications Minister Stephen Conroy will base his decision on an independent audit of Next G's coverage by the Australian Communications and Media Authority, to be delivered in early January"

Thats correct Mr Bonz, I said in the other thread on this subject the report by the ACMA has not been released as yet.
All the speculation on this to date has been bull$hit.
January 2008 will be the release and they will evaluate all the circumstances at that point.
Including the claim that once CDMA is turned off they can crank up the power on the Next G Network.

If its not up to scratch then the switch off may be delayed a week, a month or a year but rest assured it will be switched off.

Shane,

I spoke to a Telstra consultant today upgrading my NextG data pack. I commented that IMHO CDMA was still better than NextG and his comment was NextG would improve when they turned off the CDMA network on 28 Jan 2008. May not have filtered down the line or they are just trying to switch people over as soon as they can.

Hi Shane

The latest on the Telstra website still says -

"Telstra remains on track with our plans to close the CDMA network on 28 January 2008.

This means that your CDMA phone will not work after this date."

Maybe your radio station knows more than Telstra knows about itself?

Sounds to me like a government release of information that Telstra don't want people to know about

Hi Shane
Re my post about CDMA closing on the 28th January, 2008, I had 2 phone calls from Telstra Yesterday. The return calls were from our Telstra Rep in Adelaide and someone in Sydney, after I contacted them re false information that the CDMA network was not closing.

Our Adelaide rep told me that Telstra have obtained copies of the 5AA Story, to see where this misleading information is coming from.
Both our Adelaide rep, and the Telstra person from Sydney, both confirmed that the network WILL CLOSE on the 28th January 2008 as I first stated.

Where I live in country SA, the NextG service is better that CDMA. I have made the change and have better phone coverage with my Samsung handset.

The only trouble now, is that there are thousands of CDMA network people out there that have not made the change, and they will be the first to cry foul, when they have all been given ample time to make the change to the better Network

I am not a Telstra employee and have nothing to gain with the closure of CDMA, but my advise is if you still want to be able to use a phone after the 28th January 2008 and are still using CDMA, make the change, or you will be without any phone coverage at all.

Cheers

Stephen

It doesn't matter if it will close on the 28 Jan 08 or sometime there after - what does matter is that it is going to close, sooner rather than later, so all those hanging to their old CDMA phones are eventually going to get caught out.

I can't understand why people are fighting it - there is no way Telstra will reverse their decision as they have spent too much money on this new network and a few upset customers around the country are not really going to bother them.

If someone leaves it too the last minute - then it is going to cost them and they will have no-one else to blame but themselves.

It's no different than when they got rid of the old analogue network to change to GSM.

Hi Karl

We are waiting till after the change. We won't need a mobile until we next go away - planned for May next year, so will just watch the market and buy. It doesn't matter if the old CDMA expires - it has run out of credit and will be thrown out anyway.

I doubt that the phones will be dearer then - may be more models available for pre paid, and they may even be cheaper once the pressure is off.

Lost revenue if you rely on a phone for business, time waiting for a suitable phone - as with everything if there is a rush and everyone wants a similar phone, stocks deplete etc.

Remember - Prior Preparation Prevents P**s Poor Performance - CDMA is going it's a fact so either prepare for it now or suffer the consequences.

I'm still waiting to - until after the change over. The trend with technology in general is cheaper for more features, and i don't think the production of new Next G mobiles will stop after 28 January.
