I have a fishing sit on top Kayak and am heading off from Sydney March/April next year...out to Broken Hill then up the middle.

Is there safe places to paddle/fish in my kayak anywhere north prior to I get to W.A. ???

Any rivers would be gladly accepted....

Draw a line across Australia from Mackay to Port Hedland, and presume nowhere is safe above that line. In fact that might even be too far north.
Crocs come hundreds of miles in from the coast and a bloke fishing from a plastic dinner plate would be awfuly tempting to a saltie.

Anywhere you find water.

Up the middle which way?...you are very vague....

The Darling River is down to about 10% of its capacity. Maybe there will be some billabongs on Cooper Creek. The Diamantina and Georgina Rivers will have safe paddling on extended billabongs. There are some inland lakes in the NT. Thats about it for water courses. Most rivers will flow after heavy rains but soon dry up to as series of waterholes and billabongs.

Estuarine Crocodiles will be found inland in the northern part of the country but seldom below a line drawn between Broome and Townsville.

Cheers

Nah

No water up the middle.

The only notable waterhole is on the Finke River on Henbury Station and they do not allow visitors to the waterhole. Maybe Lake Woods out from Elliot NT may have a enough water in it for a paddle. Large billabongs only start around the Katherine area and over to the Victoria River and Kimberley regions. Gregory NP has some good stretches of water in the East Baines River but the possibility of big fella crocs is real up there.

maybe around Isisford or the Thompson nr Longreach and similar, but definitely not around the top end. I'm getting a bit windy about paddling more and more these days with increased numbers of sharks and crocs. Estuaries are the most popular venues for paddlers but also happen to be pretty popular with snapping jaws.... and if you thought that paddling out to the outer reef Islands was safe......check this out

make sure it's safe before you go out.

Dunco

The post is a bit vague.

At the lower end of the trip your going to be struggling to find water at that time of year. Around Innamincka you can paddle along the Cooper, but the bloody flies will drive you up the wall unless there is a late Monsoon coming across from the West to cool things down.

If you continue North at that time of the year, you won't have much luck until you reach the Gregory or Leichhardt Rivers up on the Gulf. I certainty wouldn't recommend putting a bit of plastic on that water. There's some big crocs up there.

As you go west, there are a lot of inviting opportunities. The rivers, creeks and overflow in the Kimberley at the end of the Monsoon are something to be experienced. Leaving all that aside, the locals don't go fishing in canoes.

Once you get to areas like Fitzroy Crossing things settle down a bit. The above advice from others is correct.

Regards

Kim

Thanks guys.

I thought there was only one "up the middle"...I must be looking at the wrong map, must be chinese :)

I do plan on taking the Kayak and was just wondering if there was anywhere "safe" up north to paddle, but obviously not. I will just have to wait until I start heading down south in W. A.

Some nice places. The big lizards will atack more out of territory than food.
katherine gorge is a must to canoe down but the mob that own the hire industry dont make it easy for you. the Flora river is just to die for canoeing those crystal clear torquise waters and navigating the limestone tuffs. manning gorge also pretty darn good. windjana gorge and geike gorge also well worthwhile.
I didnt paddle in places like the daley or adelaide river and definitly not around shady camp

Dunco,
I saw this story thought it might interest you.
I've seen crocs close up and there's no way you'd get me in the water with one, but that's just MHO.
Happy fishing.
