I am wishing to affixe a strip of velcro to my camper trailer to join the awning to trailer with no gap inbetween. I dont have time to get it sewn as I am going away on Monday. I have decided to glue it for now and get it sewn when I return.
What glue should I use???

Hi Grassparot
You don't say what type of Velcro so I will assume the woven type (not sticky back stuff)
The woven type has an elastomeric binder coat which locks in the hooks and loops in the ground weave and so most commerical glues don't work
well with it.
Hence they reccomend sewing, or at least starting with the adhesive backed stuff and hand sewing a few points to help it hold.
I'd take a little hand sew kit and sew it when you can.

I was thinking of glueing the sew on type but from what you have said this may not work. Could I glue the stick on type?

I would admit to araldite thru the canvas but not to be reccomended
Actually our Velcro rep is pretty good and you may like to call them on 03 9703-2466 (Velcro aust)

Robin,
I have rang the rep in SA and he was very helpful. Said I could glue it with "contact adhesive" as the velcro is not under "load" on the joins. Tent poles are taking all the weight and support.
Thanks for your help

Grassparrot,
I've used contact adhesive to stick velcro in odd spots and it works
well. KwikGrip (thin) works better than most - I coat both surfaces, and leave it apart until its fully dry; then smear a bit more on each, get them tacky and join.

No glue will provide a bond strong enough to achieve what you desire.
That's why they are sewn in the first place.
I wouldn't risk contaminating the canvas and potentually destroying its waterproof properties.
My tip is to do without the awning "one more time" and have the velcro sewn on at a more convenient time.

You need cotton glue, apply liberal amounts using a needle or a sewing machine!!!!

Grass Parrot, Give Doug Smith a call on 8586 3647. He works from a shed near the pub on Para Street. He might be able to squeeze you in. He is Gus' brother if you knew him.

Thanks Des, knew his brother, but not him. Have seen the set up behind the drive through and wasn't sure if it was up and running yet.

I reckon that the advice on sewing is the best, but one product I have used on canvas is worth a mention. There is stuff in a tube called "Shoe Goo." You use it to build up new soles on worn shoes. Waterproof, tough and flexible when dry. I have used it successfully on a number of repairs to tents and waterproof jackets. I'd be inclined to use some and sew it as
well.

solution,

Daza,
I like a bit of lateral thinking. I wasn't laughing, but I was surprised. After some thought I will be gluing the velcro as per what the Rep told me but if it gives me grief the staples has some merrit as I have access to a stapler at work that can do 120 pages at a time.
Thanks for your input.

There is an industrial type glue used by Motor Trimmers and Upholsterers.
I recently had a canopy built for my trailer and the Upholsterer forgot to put the velcro strips on to Dacron type material. He then glued them on and they are stuck fast. Seeing same fella this afternoon and will ask for the name of the glue.
Cheers

Willem,
A brand name and type would be great. See how you go and let me know.
Thanks in advance.

My Upholsterer said that the glue I mentioned was only good for adhesive to PVC type materials.
He suggested you speak to Canvas Makers as there is a special glue to be used on canvas but he did not know the name of it. The industrial type glues are made by Ferrari(brand name)
Cheers

Grass,
If you are gunna glue it, try Selley's Liquid Nails. I know its a woodworking adhesive, but we used to use a similar type glue, back in the BTEC days, to stick back tags onto cattle.
It used to stick like the proverbial!!!!!!!!!
Have a good holiday,
Hooroo,
Bob.
