Where the hell is their pride!?

Twice in the past few weeks I have had well dressed young boys (16 or 17) approach me and ask me for a coin or two.

The first was when I was walking out of the Centrelink/Electoral Commission offices after casting an early vote and a boy asked me for “some money for the bus”, the second was tonight in a local shopping centre car park when I dropped some coins on the ground and a young boy in “Shopping Trolley Collectors” uniform came running up and asked me if I could give him $1 so he could release the trolleys to take them inside: “ask your boss for the coin” I replied.

I had a tough upbringing with little to no money but I would have gone hungry before my pride would ever have allowed me to ask a stranger for money. What the hell is going on!?

Better than a couple of young blokes I know who don't mind breaking a window for the change in the ashtray.

I had one come up to me in Morwell, he had a slab of VB under his arm & asked me for a "coupla dollars for the bus fare home".
I politely suggested that he take his beer back & get a refund, then buy his own bus ticket!

Shaker,

Sorry to say this if you're living there but Morwell has become a real zoo! Missus was working at a Cafe in Tarwin Street and it was considered a dangereous run to take move the days takings to the bank across the street! Constant harrasment from local bretheren. Coppers to worried about consequences to do anything about it. Times have changed. Hope you're living in T'gon or Motown. Mick.

Shaker.
One of the first jobs I had was loading spuds on the narrow gauge at Moondara.
That would have been about 1957. Times have changed since then, eh?

I wouldn't've dared ask.

It's probably easy money though. Numbers game and all that.......

I had a good upbringing, private school and all, I give if someone asks and I dont have an issue even though it is probably making the problem worse BUT one time an abo guy in kalgoorlie askes for money (background is they do this a lot and a fair amount of the time the money goes on alcohol) so I ask him what for, he says food, I tell him I will be back in a min and am going to the shop to get a sandwich. (I know this sounds patronising but I have seen these guys drunk pulling women along by their hair in public places, so I didnt want my money contributing to that!) So anyway he protests and gets angry and wants the money, he would not accept food so in the end I didnt give anything.

I buy anyone as much food as they can eat - I won't give them a cent to spend on grog, tobacco or drugs.

It's too easy a way to make a lot of tax-free, work-free money, so I'm not encouraging them.

Yep! I walked past an Indian woman this week collecting for the Blind Society or something in Campsie, I didn't take much notice, I just held my hand up and walked past. She was actively pushing for donations and on my return saw people giving money. She appeared to have no ID badge pinned on her and who knows where the the money is going..Most people don't just stand there all day just to help some charity. Was she legitimate and collecting on behalf of the charity? Was she getting half of the takings, who knows. When I was about 10yo, a school mate of mine came to our door, i remember it well, he was collecting money for some Aboriginal charity, I remember asking him at the time, what he got out of it, He got 10 cents out of the 20 cent ticket and he told me his boss got 5 cents.. So much for charity and the idea behind it. There would be little left over to help the said cause in many Charities

Several years ago at Flinders St Station, a girl asked me for money for her train ticket home. I offered to purchase the ticket for her and asked what type, time etc. Suddenly she didn't need a ticket anymore.

Few years ago when on holidays in Cairns a blackfella in Kuranda asked me for a smoke. Told him I didn't smoke, he asked me for money to buy some. that's when I snapped and told him I should be asking him for a dollar or two, as he gets more money and benefits than me!!!!!
