4WD for beginners

I've noticed that people come to the forum (like DREW 52586)when starting out asking really basic questions, such as what's the difference between AWD and selectable 4WD vehicles, and it would take pages to bring them up to speed.
At your POST OFFICE shop until 25 Dec. there's a Gregorys book for $9.95 called '4WD Survival Guide" and it's good value.

There's also a more detailed book '4 Wheelers Bible' by Jim Allen
(published by MBI) which would have to be one of the most informative books round.

Also when slacko people want to know about vehicles e.g. Kia Sorentos why don't they GOOGLE first, get the 'unbiased' testers reports, and then get all the prejudices and bias served up by us.

If it's the one I'm thinking about it's by a bloke by the name of John BASHAM. It's a great book and covers from basic 4x4 knowledge thru to more interesting stuff such as winching, repairs and bush welding. He's also written a caravaners survival guide. He is a full time nomad now and is enjoying life on the west coast somewhere.

Cheers. Mick

Sure Steve but the point I'm trying to make is that some of the questions asked are so general that it's very difficult to narrow down the info required. For example if somone calls up asking, 'are the new Mitsubishi Pajeros any good?, what can you say that's really unbiased and informative. However if they ask(after looking at the Pajero forum) ' how bad is the DPF problem that people are experiencing' then they're likely to get a more sensible answer (from people who actually own one)
All I'm saying is that there are some people in this forum who have amazingly detailed knowledge on multiple subjects and if they're asked a 'specific' question, they can give extremely informative answers (and they've done this for me)

Sorry Steve, that response might have been a bit terse but I must have a problem with some 'questions'. The first 4WD drive I got was a Lada and despite all its faults it was built like a brick chit house and would go anywhere. I was out on the Birdsville track and some TFI said to me "'Did you get here in that?." EXCUSE ME.
No, I rented it from a depot just in behind them thar hills.

Wigger,

Not everyone is as intelligent as you it seems mate :)

I think I better watch what I ask in here in the future for fear of being ridiculed by you.

Lighten up old son and if someone wants to ask a question, let them...you don't have to reply...or even read it if you don't want to, that is why we live in a free society mate.

The good thing about this web site, its free.

Another good thing about this web site, im getting loads of ideas and information from different people, who are out there today driving the vehicle that i might be interested in

Ive also done the whole search through the internet review thing, nrma is a good one for that. A great site i found for fuel usage is http://www.greenhouse.gov.au/fuelguide/

and

im getting '4 Wheelers Bible' by Jim Allen from Santa :)

maybe you should have standard set of test questions for the novices to answer before they are allowed to enter this forum
then you would not have to waste your time with them

Wigger,

No matter what level of 4wd experience or mechanical/electrical etc aptitude a poster has, there'll always be someone on this site prepared to help them out. That's what it is all about.

Hey guys I"ve got my hands up. Look above and you'll see me grovelling and asking for forgiveness. Glad to see that you've found the books Drew, The Allen book might be a bit hard to find.
As well as the 4WD survival book at the P.O. there's anoher one for $9.95 called "4WD weekends" It could be worth looking at.

Its not only about knowledge, I do enjoy this site particularly because of the range of opinions. You will get people of various backgrounds and abilities, most of which are happy to communicate, debate and discuss. I like the humorous approach of many of the posters and I am for one have been able to trust and rely on lots of advice without regret.
One source I use quite often is 4WDaction.com.au, particularly John Rooth's columns. Roothy rocks, he is funny, knowledgeable and of course he drives a Toyota, lol.

After all Wigger, isn't our common hobby the reason we are here, regardless of our level of expertise or the car we drive?
Cheers, Udo

I tend to agree with both sides but what gets up my nose is titles on posts.
Like " Brakes" " Diff Locks" "Wiring"
Not actual titles but you know what I mean.

If you want help with brakes, for instance, Head it with " Brakes locking after reline what did I do wrong"

Much more informative and more likely to get replies in my book.

Classic recent one was Thread 52326 National Fuel Price Feedback.
Made no sense at all . Wasnt even about the heading if you could make sense of the spelling.

Dave , Just hope the real Twintrail is not watching tonight, otherwise I could be in deep do dahs if he's a homicidal maniac with a deep seated persecution complex combined with raging paranoia. If you never hear from me again, you'll be able to point the cops in the right direction

So you are the fella I met out bush in the NT in July this year

So tell me, whats the point of this part of the post......And the inclusion of my gear that is in my Members profile?

In a previous post you asked a lot of questions and whilstI am happy to respond and to help people where I can, I take a dim view of you not declaring who you really are by posting under an alias.

Shouldn't posters only be allowed to use one name only.
At least that way newbies would know who's who.
Some posts are bad enough without hiding behind false names.
Would get you banned on some of the other forums I'm a member on.

Also to the moderators. How about highlighting the spellcheck button so more use it.
