Hi everyone...I've made the error of buying a new (to me) 4wd before selling my old one...2 months on, and I've had no luck in selling my 2000 Prado which is in excellent condition and has only done 103000 kms...and I really need the money! I've advertised in the trading post, car sales and
Adelaide Advertiser...every weekend I get a call from someone who never turns up, despite staying at home waiting for them at the arranged time (grrr). Any other ideas for sale?
Cheers
Mark

It's petrol..my guess is, if it was diesel there would be much more interest...

When I traded in my 2002 Diesel Pajero with 97,000km on it, I had no trouble getting $30,000 tradein.
Initially they would think it was a Petrol and offer $22,000 and no discount on the new one - they just weren't interested in trading a Petrol Pajero.
I'm sure glad I paid $2000 extra for the Diesel 4 years ago.

You could place a shameless post/plug in the Exploroz
Forum instead of the Trader section!

Selling before Xmas is a bad time to sell. Selling in January is a good time to sell. Hang in there.

Margo,
At least you are getting calls , so you are in the right ballpark re price.
I just took 6 weeks to sell my wifes Suzuki Swift , for what I thought was a cheap price , cheapest in the trading post and no calls for weeks !
Dont envy you , selling a car is almost my worst thing !
Glenn.

Other than the aforementioned "shameless plug" here in the
forum, why haven't you advertised it in the ExplorOz Trader?

We were in the same boat as you...had it on ebay with a buy it now price....then changed it to bid from $6k with a buy it now ....still no good with idiots ringing up and not turning up..
All changed when we added a buy it now, reserve and started the bidding at 0.99c ....... sold with an hour to go and the guy paid for it without seeing it and flew in from
cairns.....

agree that EBay works, and also agree about starting bidding at a low price and having a realistic reserve to start a bit of a 'bidding war'.
Being a Toyota is a positive for resale; being petrol is not. There's also been a sudden dip in used car values in the last few years with 1 million new car sales each year flooding the used market. I used to be able to sell my second-hand cars for what I bought them for second-hand...no more...

why not give some thought to a lpg conversion and then sell. cost me $2300 here in
sydney for same vehicle and i got the $2000 back in govt rebate in 2 weeks. would put your car in a different category of buyers with them able to look at cost savings on fuel etc as that is often the turnoff. the second petrol
tank stays so it ends up as duel fuel. only problem maybe the delay in getting it done with xmas here. took me about 3 weeks and it has been no problem. still good power etc. cheers

Mark, I'm finding that people don't want to leave the city to see a 4wd! I have a Patrol on ExplorOz Trader and Carsales.com.au and despite receiving numerous enquiries, no one has come to see it. They seem to go quiet at the idea of taking a drive out of town.

Hi
Laura
Beats me why they want a 4wd!
When we went looking for an F250, we considered purchasing from any state, even 'looking' at one in Tasmania. As it was, the one we got was in WA, but it still involved a flight to the
Pilbara (also had to drive to the city to the airport).
When we bought our caravan, we drove from WA to Qld.

Its a 3.o litre? there are so many of them for sale that i can understand why you get so many tire kickers / no shows - 4.2 litre on the other hand -- becoming hard to find and not as common as the 3 litre

Perhaps the cost of fuel, morgtage, Christmas , threat of an interest rate rise, falling share market, falling ozzie dollar, threat of recession in USA (particularly) etc are factors that make it increasingly more difficult to justify some expenses - such as travelling to the country or any unecessary distance(s). Just my theory.

I recently flew down from
Townsville to near
Gladstone to pick up my 100TD handed over the cheque and drove it back that arvo/evening. I was very happy to do this as it was exactly what I was after and I gave it a good shakedown run without kids annoying me for 1000km, lol.
The seller was surprised that I would do this so filled up both tanks for my efforts. Great rig, good price, happy people.

I find it almost laughable that people will enquire about a 4wd, then not want to drive out of the city to look at it - what do they want to do with it? Keep it on their lawn to look trendy?
What's more we aren't that far out in the sticks, and if we have a meeting, conference or whatever in
Perth, usually do it in a day trip; drive, attend all day then come
home. All in a day's work.
Boc, my son got a 4.2 and is rather more than disappointed (to put it politely) with the performance; especially after our 3 ltr.
Oh
well - the right person will find us no doubt.

We have a hilux on Car Sales and same situation as you. We had no calls for the first two weeks then suddenly we had 10 in one day. Still no buyers and we have also had the frustrating no shows (very annoying when you leave friends bbq's to be
home to sell the car and they don't show). Hold in there, I agree with previous response, this time of year is a bad time to sell. January should be much better.

But be aware that after 2007 turns over, your car is effectively a whole year older, and therfore will fetch a lot less money.
I recently bought a small car for my daughter and convinced the seller to accept my offer after pointing out the above. He was, of course, unhappy about getting $1000 less than he was asking (15,500asking) but was better off with $14500 now rather than $14500 in January.
His trade-in value on the new car he had already bought was $12500, so he didn't do too badly from that perspective, but he still dropped a huge amount of money in 18 months he'd owned it.

Average time to sell a car is 3 months, unless you want to give itr away. When I was looking for a Prado I could not find a good low mileage petrol (100000)ks

i sold a car for $20 once. Owners actually turned up before the ad came out (contacts with the newspaper I would guess)
new owners drove it away and police found it in a
creek a week later :(

I posted my 2000 petrol prado up on trader and 0n carsales. It's only got 40,000Km on the clock, extras and met all
services at where it was bought. But no calls yet. I'm in no rush though.

Whether you're selling a Petrol or a Diesel 4WD, if you want to get a decent price, you'll have to wait until fuel prices fall again.
I friend bought a very cheap 4WD during the last fuel price surge.
