Firstly a merry Xmas and a happy New Year to all Exploroz members.
Now to my dilemma, I have the Oziexplorer software, a TomTom XL One, a Laptop and a GPS mouse, How do I connect them all together and where is the GPS information displayed?
I also have the book "GPS Vehicle Navigation in Australia", however I am still confused as to what happens when and where.
Please excuse my ignorance in all this, I am depending on the experience of fellow members.

Your GPS mouse can be connected to the Laptop which can run OziExplorer software. You will also need some digital maps to associate with Ozi as it does not come with its own maps.
I can recommend "Natmap Raster 2005: Premium - DVD" which costs around $120 or so.
OziExplorer will give you Moving Map capability showing where you are at any time, on the map displayed on the Laptop.
The screen will also show the co-ordinates and your vehicle's speed as you travel.
For detailed installation instructions see the OziExplorer web site.
As to your TomTom XL One, that is a stand-alone device that cannot be "linked" to anything else. It is good for City driving in place of a street directory, but is of limited use in more remote areas. It has its own built-in GPS, but you cannot load additional maps to use on it.

Hello
Install OziExplorer on your laptop – then read as much of the help file as you can. Mess around with whatever maps you can get you hands on, create waypoints and tracks etc and see what you understand and don’t understand.
Get back with specific questions on issues you have as they arise. A broad statement like ‘I am still confused as to what happens when and where” is difficult to answer as it is unclear at what point you are having issues. There is little point in rewriting the entire help file here on the off chance the issue you are having is covered.
It may also be in your best interest to join the yahoo OziExplorer user group and ask specific questions there (as
well as here)
OziExplorer users group
Here is some info on connecting a GPS mouse for OziE website –
Instructions on Connecting GPS to Laptop/PC
When connected and with OziExplorer setup and running the “GPS information” will used to show your position on whatever maps you have of the area you are in. Coordinate info is also shown.
Don’t know much about Tom Toms but I guess it is a stand alone GPS/navigation system – I wouldn’t bother trying to connect it to the laptop for the purposes of running moving map as its probably not possible …but I could be wrong. I don’t think OziExplorer has direct support for Tom Tom data (POI/Tracks) either …but again I could be wrong. There may be some conversion programs available if you want to upload/download data from the Tom Tom to OziExplorer but it is more geared towards "normal" handheld GPS units and the OziCE version of the program as far as data gathering and manipulation is concerned.
Cheers
Greg
