Hi Just wondering if there is a better method of cleaning the gas jet in my lantern. I have unscrewed it from the lamp and soaked it in metho for half hour before trying to blow the metho through the hole.(This works great on my gas fridge!) Refitted the gas jet to lantern but it still burns very weakly whether I attach it directly to the bottle or on its usual position on top of a pole. I replaced the jet new only 18mths ago after similar problems. Any ideas out there? Would love to fix this problem ASAP or the whole lantern will be replaced in frustration!!

Cat5959,
I have found Coke, the soft drink, the best for cleaning almost anything including gas jets.
If you do have to change you light source have a think about a 12v fluo light.

G'day Cat5959, you could try wire jet files for a MIG welder.

Have to agree with Wayne. (Replace the lantern in frustration)
I had no problem with blocked jets on the gas lantern, just a string of broken mantles.
Ditched the gas light for a decent 12 volt light and haven't missed the lantern at all. In fact I loved the improvement so much I now have three 12 volt lights I use for different purposes.
Now, the stove was another problem. On that I did experience blocked jets and although cleaning them, (including blowing them out with compressed air) decided that the same problem was going to re-occur.
So I ditched the old stove as
well and replaced it with a low pressure two burner Coleman stove which doesn't have jets.
Now I'm a happy chappy.

Sandman
Have you tried dropping the blocked jet into boiling
water for 5 minutes ? Works a treat !
That was shown to me by a bloke from a
Camping Shop.
Works a treat .
We have gas this and gas that, and dust getting in the jets is a real problem, hence we are changing to all Low Pressure Gas, and then nothing blocks up ( I hope )
Cheers

Bucky,
No didn't try that.
I dropped the whole lantern in the back of the shed and changed over to 12 volt fluro/LED.
Great light output, minimal current draw and best of all, no one can burn themselves on the light. Excellent for those with
young kiddies.

Jets are approx $7 for two........not bad for 36months ( re; you got 18months out of one !! )
Just replace them....not worth the hassling around !!
I believe the gas is a bit crook nowadays....not as clean as it used to be ???

Don't poke anything through the jets as they have very fine gauze mesh in the back of them to diffuse the gas.
The best way to clean them is boil them in
water for a few minutes and then blow them gently dry.
I'm like the others ditched the gas lantern years ago now use a 12v CFL globe in a peanut butter jar, heaps of light for very low current draw.

Yep, I've boiled my jets in my stove and it cleans them nicely. I also keep a couple of spares anyway. but the boiling seems to work every time.

Aero-start .that you use to start reluctant motors works
well.
Always turn gas off at bottle so as not to leave stale gas in hose.

agree with some others buy good quality 12 volt fluros and either run them from your vechicle or 12 volt 8 amp hour batteries that you can carry anywhere{my oldest are going on 15 years and they have seen some use}If you still want to clean the jets then buy some some nylon coated 7 strand from your nearest tackle
shop about 60 lb is about right and peel off one strand.
Cheers Graeme.

Thank you for all your replies. I will try the boiling in
water method first ten replace the jet if that doesn't work. The reason we don't use the fluro light is because we don't like it. It lets off a weird light that hurts my eyes when reading. We find the gas light more of a warm glow and brighter but in a different way (When the jet is not blocked that is)

Best thing is to not read.........just drink more ????
Have you tried some of the new LED striplights......54 leds and comparible to a fluro but a whiter light and .....almost no bugs......and less power....
