Just got a PDA configured with Ozi and wondering what are the best detail maps for general intra/inter state road maps to use prior to heading off the black stuff. Would like something with reasonable details as to travelling between towns, more than the strip-type navigation of the likes of Tom Tom and the like?

Hema Road Atlas is pretty good for general travel and even some bush tracks

I find a reasonable Oz-wide map is the Natmap Raster. All of oz on one map. Haven't tried it outback yet - I'd use Hema maps or other such region specific if travelling in a remote area and wanting as much up to date detail as possible.

However for general regional cruising, I reckon natmap's fine.

desert,

I use NATMAP Raster Premium 2005 and they work very well with OziExplorer. I have a 4gb card in my PDA and the 5 or 6 zones fit on it no worries. You will need to run a conversion pragram (downloadable from the Ozi site) which converts the map data into a format readable by OziCE.

The maps are very good and cover all of Australia.
There may be the odd track that hasn't been included, but I haven't found it yet. (still looking though)

You can have as many maps as you desire, but I haven't found the need for them.

The moving map function is just like having a detailed, colour road map in front of you all the time.

I also run a PDA with a 4gb SD Card. I have natraster mosaic plus all the topo SA maps and all the Hema and westprint maps on it and its using about 3gb.
Can't help you with the SD formatting issue but I am aware that there are some problems with the cards bought on Ebay.
I'm sure that someone else will throw light on the problem.

Further to the sd card incompatibility. The SDHC format is not compatible with the Asus PDA. Seems this is a format more suitable for digital camera's. Therefore, in 4GB, what brand of card do you recommend and where to get from?

One of my PDAs will recognise 4gig SD cards but will not recognise 4 gig SDHC cards

The camera shop at Casuarina NT stocks 4 gig SD cards but I don't know if you want to drive that far to get one.

You could probably pick up a card from a shop in SA if you hunt for it or do a search on the web

I use both TomTom and Ozi CE on my PDA.

Have Natmaps, Westprint and Hema for Ozi.

Life's great and it just keeps getting better

Thanks Kumunara, although it seems plain old 4GB sd cards are a bit thin on the ground. I've only just learnt the hard way about the SDHC formatting. Cheers.

I have the whole of the Australia Mosaic dumped onto SD card. No need for the 'conversion' on my ipaq PDA !!

ECW files are fine on ARM CPUs without the need for conversion to OZF formats.
