I was trying to find fuel in
Canberra yesterday so I could drive
home to
Melbourne. I couldn't believe there were no petrol stations from
Parliament House and through the city and out on the road to Yass. Do they all run their cars on electricity? Finally saw a sign and did a 2klm detour through various twisty side streets and got some. I might make my first million by opening a service station there. Am I blind? Maybe someone can enlighten me. Christine.

Haven't lived in the ACT for about 12 years, but there used to be a couple of servos at Braddon, just off Northbourne Avenue. That's great if you know where to go, but a bit useless if you don't. I'd be a bit surprised if there wasn't a typical "services" sign on the side of the main road.
As for the question: "Do they all run their cars on electricity?"..... I think the answer to that is NO................ they run their cars on HOT AIR!!!! ;-))

Pretty sure there are small pump signs beside Northbourne Ave as it goes through Civic, but unless you are in the RH lane they would be easy to miss.
The only hot air here is of the imported variety - flies in for sitting days! Wish my Troopy would run on it though.

All shops, including petrol stations, are neatly tucked away in the back streets of the suburbs.
You will not find any on the main roads. I guess it is in keeping with the sterile landscape for the politicians and a nice neat captial for visiting world leaders.
The only maiin road I am aware of that has any is the one out to Queanbeyan thru Manuka.
There are heaps of them there if you know where to look. Just follow the signs that usually point towards "shops". Silly I know but that is how it is there.

" a nice neat captial for visiting world leaders."
But the visiting world leaders come and clog up
Sydney - gives the "security" people an excuse to arrest and lock up innocent people who want to cross the road.
But just the same - at least a sign pointing to a servo would be great. We have had the same hassle over the years.
Funny place but they have to do something with our taxes.

Canberra is one of those
places where you gain the "knowledge" as part of your right of passage to live there.
I've found the best wa to find things like petrol stations is to ask someone.
It is a strange place....

No you wont make a million , and no you aren't blind. Its a matter of knowing where to look
Thats one of the tricks of
Canberra.
Pretty much everything is based around a small shopping centre in each suburb. You wont find any shops just on their own.
No , there isn't a Petrol station between Parli House and Yass , not directly anyway.
There is a couple just off Northbourne Ave (about 100m away) , Couple in Dickson (about 500m away) , and a new one being built just off the Barton highway at Gold Creek (about 50m away).

As wizard 1 said they are tucked away in the side streets, there are a fair few of them around mostly by shopping centers but yes they are hard to find when we first went there we got the same idea as you...after a few trips you get to konw them.
