I'm having trouble getting my GPS to communicate with Oziexplorer. I try NMEA communication and Oziexplorer says "error opening com port", "could not initialise communications".
I have a Magellan explorist 500, and the hema rastor series digital maps purchased from this site's shop.

No problems opening maps and searching through them but can't use any functions on Ozi if the GPS isn't even recognised.
I've calibrated the GPS (correctly I hope). Done an archive search. Looked at Oziexplorer website. Changed usb ports. Still can't figure out what's wrong.

If I had hair I would be pulling it out.

Any suggestions appreciated please.

Had a look at that RK. Do I need to be using a serial port? I'm using the USB lead that came with the GPS.

Barnsey - Sounds like a serial port issue - your configuration settings may be wrong. You are using a USB port, but you will probably/possibly need to configure that port as a serial port by using a USB driver to do the USB to serial conversion (unless that's built into the GPS??. I'm not familiar with the Magellan, but the basic NMEA comms is a serial standard. Somewhere you'll need to go to serial.

If you're running W2000 like me, to check what serial ports your machine thinks you've got - Right click My Computer, then Properties, then Hardware, then Device Manager. This should give you a list, including COM ports. Click com ports and see what com ports you have. If there's an odd one there (a high numbered one like COM 8) try setting your comms to that in Ozi's Configuration window.

Course I could be totally wrong (there are numerous precedents!) but it's worth checking this out. Took me a long time to resolve what sounds like the same problem.

Had a look back through the posts and yes Gramps you're right. Magellan 500. I wonder if it's a Magellan thing or just with the 500? I have member messaged Willie to find out more about what happened with his.
Thanks

Hi Barnsey
Try this.
You must have the latest Ozi update.3.95
In Ozi Click file -- configuration
In GPS set-up "gps" Select: Magellan
"gps model" Magellan USB
"symbol set" Magellan
Set everything to WGS 84
It may work. It did on my Explorist XL.
If not email Des Newman at Oziexplorer he should be able to sort it out.Or the Magellan distributor in your state.

Seems to be a Magellan thing ...LOL. At one stage my old Magellan Map 330 played up as well. A young Muddydoe helped me out.

Try this:

Go to my computer
Right click
Then left click on properties
Then click on hardware
Then click on device manager

When list comes up
Double click on ports (all this if you are using a serial to usb adapter) it should say something like serial on usb port (com4)
Take note of which com port and close off these screens

NEXT open oziexplorer and
Click on File in top toolbar
Next click on configuration
Then when panel is open
Click on com and in General settings..........
Set com port to that which was found in my computer

Cheers

99.99999999999999999999999999% of problems with thier Oziexplorer can be solved from the FAQ, tips and setup advice provided in their website.

So why don't people go there first instead of the "I'll jump onto a website forum and someone else will know" default.

Despite claims you checked the website, Richard provides a link to the exact area to fix such problems.

Wizard,

Maybe because "someone else will know"!

Not everyone is a "Wizard" with computers. They need to be helped and most of us don't mind at all.

Wizard, many people come into my emergency department with simple complaints. They appear trivial to me. You know what, there is a lot of medical information on the internet. Why don't they just look there instead of coming to hospital?
Maybe you know the answer Wizard.
