Hi to all, Could someone please give me some good advise as Ive never towed before.
I have recently bought new family van weighing 2 tonne loaded. I still have my holden stationwagon ( which is generally full of stuff when we go away for weekends).
We are now changing job locations from WA to QLD and tossing up between a Jeep Wrangler 4 door, towing capacity of 1300 or a nissan navara dual cab towing capacity of 3 tonne to tow our van. Ive been looking at the Grand Cherokee with towing capacity of 3500. It needs to be a work horse for my husband when we get home one day. I have toddlers just to make it more interesting, cheers, mustang

Hi Mustang, I guess to give a reasonable opinion, if you could advise :
1.If the vehicles that you have been looking at are all diesels.
2.Have you had the van on a weigh bridge fully loaded (including full water tanks).
3.Do you intend to do long distance touring (apart from driving from WA to Qld or course).
4.Your husband will be using the vehicle as a work vehicle so what does he do? ie I would hate to think that he intends throwing power tools etc in the back of the grand cherokee or will he tow a trade trailer.
5. Are the vehicles that you are considering all new?
There will be other questions no doubt but this will give a bit more detail.
I would rule out the Wrangler as with a tow capacity of (2.3 t?) it has not much in reserve and from what I have seen the build quality is not that flash. You will find that the more you have in reserve for towing capacity (within reason) the more the vehicle will handle towing the van and the easier it will be to drive. The last thing you want is to be changing down gear all the time with your right foot firmly planted on the floor and the kids in the back sayimg "are we there yet".

Regards

Mark

Hi Mowing,
Yes I would consider a new diesel, for relocation of van to new job sites, then I would have the 4wd to run around in with the kids until we settle back home to qld, then hubby wants to use it as trade vehicle, maybe towing a trade trailor, not sure. So I suppose it has to be a good alrounder with family versitility.

In all the reliabilty surveys I have seen put jeeps at the bottom of the pile for reliabity.

Well....I would say Navara but thats cos we have one with 3 kids in the back (age 4, 2 and nearly 1)....they fit....but its a joy getting them in and out (NOT!!)...so i look forward to the day they are all out kids seats....

navara is a work horse!! bucky will agree to it too...the st-x isnt though...its a girl when it comes to work horse standard but has all the luxeries....we have the 2006 model (d22) st-r and would recommend it over the jeeps....but depends if you want a ute or sedan type 4wd......they are 2 very different cars....

hope it helps a bit....

Kiwi,

I told you that it would be a PITA to put the kids in Mahindra when they were in child seats. Hence the purchase of Darkie.

Cheers Kev

i know its painful but thats only compared to bessie (ie our 80 series Sal....) and in a few yrs it will be all over and it will be worth it.....just gotta get there first.....

hey you move all right i guess?????

we woulda done bessie into a darkie but she was petrol and there would have been something else to do...change to diesel etc....bugger that idea....!! buy a diesel!!! glad we got rid of her when we did....gas at 75cpl!!

they are really good economically...cheaper than the 80 series on lpg! round town we usually sit on 10lph and fully loaded travelling we are the same at 10lph....most of the time a smidgn under....bucky has the 03 navara and in 06 on the desert trip he sat on about 10 - 11lph from memory!!!

they are so nice to ride in!!

Where did you get the towing cap for the Jeep at 1300kgs?

Jeep Review
RAC have the Tow Cap braked at 2300kg for the 4 door!

Personally I think the jeep would be fantastic but you have to love the look and the tradition of the jeep. Even with the CRD engine cabin space revised suspension good economy and ergonomics...its still a bit of a 'cult' vehicle.

But what you get for the money on wrangler unlimited is still about $15k cheaper than any other competitor in the same league.

Goodluck with your choice

Matt.

Hi Matt, I apologize for the spelling error, I meant to write 2300. My hubby likes the jeep firstly because of the look. you can go hard with it on the beach and you can take everything apart, seats, roof etc and literally hose it out. It portrays itself as a solid strong build that is meant for alot of outdoor activity. Could it pull a van weighing 2 t?

Hi Mustang Sal, we had a Jayco and that was 1750 loaded and didn't have a problem towing and now have a tambo for more of the outback. As others have said, my first opinion is the Navara ( proberly because i have one ) and i have 3 kids 9,11,13 and fit ok without being too cramped.

cheers,

Lance
