Hello to everyone, hope you all had a great long weekend. I'm wanting some advice about taking our Caravan into Bunya and Carnarvon NP's and would like to know if this is at all possible, if so what route's or entry points would be the best. We are coming from the Gold Coast. The caravan is a 17ft Jayco. All views would be greatfully appreciated.
Thanks
Andrea

I thought there were "no caravan" signs up to the Bunyas....not sure if all routes in have that though.

just checked EPA site:

All roads to the Bunya Mountains are steep and winding. Caravans and trailers are not recommended. No fuel is available on the mountain.

Hi Andrew,

It says on the NP website that it is not suitable for trailers or caravans, but a friend told me he took his camper trailer in and saw other caravans camping there too. I just wondered if there was another way in that I could take the van on...

sorry, you can camp at Dandabah only IIRC with a caravan/camper.

I was going to go up there last w/end, however didn't end up for other reasons. Though i do have a camper trailer which i would happily take up there, albeit carefully.

Sorry i can't be of further help.

Hi Andrea11,
Last year we towed our 16ft outback jayco poptop into the bunya national park campground we came in from toowoomba side it was not a problem we also have towed into carnavon NP We had no problem with either I think we went through a town called something like quinalow there is a great winery with a really nice white. I hope this is a help. Have a great trip. The walks are great at both national parks

Been to both, Carnarvon a few times.

Bunya Mts - go via Maidenwell. Two lanes but you may need 2nd gear in places. NP office next to main NP camp ground at Dandabah. Not the flattest camp site, but fine for a van. Good amenities including hot water.

Carnarvon. no problems for a van. Been going for about 25 years, and last time a few years ago, I think there was less than 50km of dirt road. Not allowed to camp in the NP any more, but some good private caravan parks just outside.
From Brisbane, we usually stay the night in Roma and get in just after lunch the next day. If we leave at 6am, it is a 3pm or 4pm camp setup after driving all day.
There are a couple of creek crossings, but pretty good condition, just take your time. Has been recently closed due to the heavy rain in the area, and the creeks coming up.
Might be an idea to check with NPs. Wouldn't like to be the ranger that has to put all of the stones back in place. :o)
Went to Mt Moffat a couple of years ago. Friend took a std road van with an axle over conversion no problems by being a bit careful.

The closest caravan park to Carnarvon is Takarakka which is just outside the National Park but please check with them or the Nat Park Rangers because I think that they are closed at this time of year.
I also have been told that the Farm Stay on the Injune-Springsure Road has closed.
But please do some further research as it is a great place to visit.
PS They had quite a lot of rain in the Carnarvon Range today so the creeks will be up.

Hi Andrea, I have some pics of the badabah campground in my rigs, nice spot.
Getting a van up there may be a bit tricky, but do-able for sure

Hi Andrea

I have camped at Carnarvon Gorge about 6 times in the last 9 years. Refer to this website for info : http://www.epa.qld.gov.au/projects/park/index.cgi?parkid=49

You can camp in the national park 5 weeks of the year being Qld school holidays except Christmas break. Bookings can be made on line.

I have also taken a cub camper to the bunya mtns. Going down the hills is the scary bit with a trailer pushing your tow vehicle. My suggestion is go in from maidenwell as suggested by another reply and have good brakes. Going up the lowest I dropped to was 2nd gear in a 4 cylinder mazda bravo towing 700 kilo camper.

Hi Andrea

sorry, forgot to say road into carnarvon now good you will have no need to worry with caravan. Check RACQ website or ranger if a lot of rain in case road cut. Check you have sufficient fuel.

regards Kc
