Thanks but it doesnt have some of the places i want,,I have checkd but now i think about it, Google Earth would do the trick. But a book would be more portable and reliable.. Michael

Gday Kerry, By the way, I meant more reliable in that a book is in hard copy and if you are out and about, you need a computer to acess EO.. Even when you put in a fairly well known place, say Innaminka, Eo Places gives you two places eithe side of the town, about 25ks either side, thats probably good enough but not the town itself. That led to my question about a book.. regards Michael

Just a thought Michael but did you spell it innamincka or innaminka, that will help you zero in on the towns you are looking for. Most programs and mapping software will not allow you to misspell words and achieve the results required.

You did ask for a site in your question, go and buy a Garmin GPS, it will every town in Australia and any Co-ordinate any where you need and then guide you there.

I disagree with you Dougy, all depending where i am I can't find Adelaide.
Stockport isn't there but Stockwell is, they are only 15 k's apart, but you can find it on the Mapsource CD
Cudlee creek isn't there. there are maybe a dozen others i have searched for and can never find.

Yes i know if shows up on the PC and if will on the GPS but trust me I have had times when it won't, don't ask me why it doesn't, I think I've played with GPSr long enough.
I'm not sure if the following will work

Image Could Not Be Found

where would Stockport show up in the address section somewhere between Stockdale and Stockton? I know Stockport comes after the Stockton . Maybe not Trust me Dougy I have used my and other Garmin GPSr and I couldn't find it I does show up on my Nuvi now but it won't when I'm looking for it.

Image Could Not Be Found

Here we are using Mapsource CN Version 6
I typed in Stockport in the Cityt section and all i got is Stockport Qld, thats funny because I'm sure this isn't a new town , in fact it has been there for maybe 100 years , Care factor Zero
I don't have Version 7 so I don't know it if it was there last year.

Image Could Not Be Found

here is one example where you need that dirty word Oziexplorer to find wall Flat

Notice it not in the list and you will also find it won't be in the Map either, and again you can find it in the raster maps via Oziexplorer

But you already knew that

All I wanted to say is not EVERY Town is in there.

I did find that Magellan did have everything when i did my

Homework a few years ago

Lets not talk about Magellan here because they are RUBBISH

Correct ?

Maybe not

PS I have had a few too many cougars, so forgive me :-)

I have a book from Dick Smith which lists 14,000 such places - but I haven't noticed it in their shops lately.

Might be worth a call

I have just checked Place ID: 4416 for Innamincka - with the attribute of Populated Place - Town and the waypoint Lat/Long coordinates shown are the same as printed on the WestPrint map of Innamincka and Coongie Lakes. Waypoints are waypoints - all us mapping publishers use the same government data for towns and other major attributes as we all import the Government data into our base systems. You will find the ExplorOz Places systems has all towns, cities, POIs, camp areas and this data was imported directly from the same Government source used by all mapping publishers. We then add our own extensions to the data and add other layers to customise to our own target audience - in our case, travellers/campers.

You raise a fair point regarding portability of this data however our next stage of product development for Places is a download facility alongisde the coordinates to make it easy. We do already provide the ability for you to download Plot files from PlotSwap where you will get all the waypoints within the file so most towns and major waypoints will already be available for download via this method. These are ready to load into OziExplorer so ready to use. If you need help with using any of these facilities just ask here as there are many people who are regular users of the PlotSwap system and Places systems whom I'm sure would be willing to assist.
