Here is the deal.
I currently have a 1994 Toyota 4 Runner and I am looking to upgrade. I also have a boat and the 4runner is just to thirsty on the fuel when towing it.
I am after a mid sized 4WD, preferably Turbo Diesel that will be decent on the fuel when towing 1 tonne and at least half reasonable for moderate off road work.
Looking for something under 20K.
Suggestions would be great.

Hi 944runner,
I have a 2002 Discovery Series II. The Serries II Turbo Diesel would suite your wants
well. Economical, mid sized & good value for money.
I know there are a lot of knockers out there but if you look around at members photo's etc you will see Cruisers, Patrols etc etc on tow trucks. The point I make is that any vehicle can be faulty. This is my second Disco & I have had a great run with both of them.
For the money, they deserve a look. $20k will get you a 2000 model (Qld) & up to 2002 (NSW & Vic).
Happy Travels
Cheers
Jason

Had a look at all the other contenders being suggested when I was looking to buy a mid size TD several years ago.
Pajero 2.8 - underpowered
Discovery TD5 - Too many mechanical problems (as described by several mechanics in the 4WD arena)
Jackeroo - OK but storage area small and only has one fuel tank plus that starting/oil problem.
Patrol 3.0 GUII - You start to get into that model with the engne dramas. The are a big vehicle with a small donk.
So we ended up wth the Prado TD. Its done over 140000 km. Towed a van around OZ includng off road. Its near bullet proof. Never had any major mechanical problems. Does all the off road stuff without a drama then hook o the van and head down to
Sydney for a long weekend from Brissy.
The decent size dual fuel tanks is a winner when touring, especially if your towing.
After 5 years we don't want to let her go. Look at how hard they are to find second hand and that will give you a hint.
