G'day all, I've just purchased a 95 RV6 4runner with 240000kms in reasonably good condition, although the gearbox has a whinney sort of sound. I'm confident it is the gearbox as it doesn't happen in nuetral, clutch engaged nor 4th gear (1:1 I believe). So my question is, Should I replace the oil with top quality oil and what type of oil is best suited to that box? Or should i pull the thing out and get it overhauled? Any opinions and advice are greatly appreciated.

I agree, get it fixed. If you put thicker 85/140 oil in, the box may become a little quieter, but the gear changes are a lot slower.

Some of the full synthetics have addatives as well which can help a little.
Transmax Z is not cheap but a real corker for the hilux gearbox and gives smooother changes. lux's like a real thin oil.
