LMAO

Best way is straight up the Newel to Goondawindi then decide if you want to go up the center to Charters Towers (shortest 2300km, but not as many services on the way), or head for Rockhampton, then the coast to TSV (2500km lots of stops and service). You could go through Brisbane but this takes the trip ~2900km, adding about a day in reality to the trip compared with the Charters route due to BNE traffic.

I did that exact trip last year in the middle of Jan in a 2 litre Kia Sportage towing a 2 tonne furniture trailer (12'x6'x7') in 38 degrees, and into a strong 30 kt northerly wind. Took two and a half days driving like a man possesed. I "split the difference" and took the Rockhampton route as I was having a few "hot and high" issues through Dubbo and north (flat stick in any gear = 45 km/h) and was seriously questioning my mental condition by Coonabarrabran. The thought of another 1000+ km in similar conditions wasn't appealing...at all.

Having said that you would have a better run in the middle of the dry season.

We usually travel via the inland highway as there is very little traffic and few trucks. I don't know the name of the highway however it goes through lightning ridge and hebal. Good spot for a rest and a beer at the pub.

Take the Newell highway to Moree, then the Carnarvon hwy to Roma then onto the Carnarvon Development road to Emerald then onto the Gregory Development road to Charters Towers then turn right and your at Townsville. Easy!!!
Or Take the Mitchell From Dubbo and come up through Charrleville and Longreach!

Go up the Newell from Tocumwal to Moree. Then there is two options.Mungindi,St George,Roma,Rolleston,Emerald,Clermont(fill fuel here) then to Charters towers,T'Ville.
Or you can go Moree to Goondiwindi,Miles,Taroom,Theodore,Banana,Dululu,Westwood the Rocky up the coast to T'Ville.
The latter route will be slower with more caravans/motorhomes etc sitting on 80 km/h.
Cheers.

Used to go via the Newell but even that is getting busy with interstate trucks and caravans. I now go via Dubbo, Walgett, St George, Roma, Emerald, Charters Towers, Tvl. Wide open road and buggerall traffic.

I prefer Dubbo, Bourke, Cunnamulla, Charleville, Barcaldine, Hughenden, Charters Towers, Tvl but there is a bit of dirt below Hughenden though.
