After years of tenting we bought a CT to have a bit more comfort. There are some
places better visited without a CT so we decided to look at rooftop tents.
Decided to look seriously at Shippshape. Rang the
Sydney factory hoping to arrange a visit. No - sorry we have shut the factory and are in the process of arranging to have them made overseas. Groan says I, no they will be just as good and cheaper I was told. Yeah sure.
Seems to be the way everything is going.

Universal canvas here in
adelaide make a very good Aussie-made rooftop tent, and have done so for at least 15 years. They've been in business since 1958.

Ernie at Universal Canvas recently made the camper tent for my trailer. He is not cheap but the quality and attention to detail is outstanding. I also got him to make a mesh stone quard for the trailer. I can highly recommend him.

From my experiences, Universal's gear is nothing short of 1st class. Nothing more to say.

Phil et al,
Yes I have seen Universal but it is a bit far from us and they seem only to operate locally. Only local in
Sydney with a good reputation re rooftops was Shippshape.
Am going to look at an Aussie Traveller on Monday, made in
Brisbane but they have an agent in
Sydney.
Thanks Phil - may still get to Universal as I saw one of theirs last year whilst on the road and was impressed.
cheers

Hi Alastair,
Another alternative is the
Aussie Traveller
They are based in Queensland so a visit may be a little difficult.
We bought a second hand unit a little under two years ago. Very happy with it, it's fitted to the top of our trailer and we were able to source a new orthopaedic mattress that is very comfortable.
No affiliation etc, etc........ just happy with their product.
Cheers,
Wayne.

Don't seem to be any locals in
Sydney now who have a good reputation for rooftops.
thanks

Hi Alastair,
When you are looking at tha Aussie Traveller you may want to keep this thought in mind. There are two wall sets available, we picked up both with ours :-)))
The "small" walls are a single room, the "large" walls offer the same standing room/space but extend further to half height for use as a sleeping area.
Over nighters... small walls, four pegs, all done.
Three days or more.... large walls, more pegs, a couple of poles and guy ropes.
If you would like a picture or two as it may explain it better, please let me know an e-mail address to send them to. After my last attemp(s) to post a
pic of the Cargills on this site, I'm not game to try again.
Regards,
Wayne.

Wayne,
I would be interested in some pictures. In the info I have on the Aussie Traveller it only has the basic straight walls. Even though they should do all we want I would like to see the alternatives.

Just replace the spaces and 'at' with @ - avoids the automated email sniffers getting it.
thanks

Have a look at used Shippshape's... there's a few around .. I bought ours last year and been very happy with it thus far. Good build, good quality .. even though ours was 'used' and a few years old, it came virtually flawless...
