Don't think I will be watching my car roll away from me, but as a spectator, it could be interesting!!

A similar thing happens at Straws lane at the back of Hanging Rock in Victoria.
I'm not sure on the reason why, but I have been there & the car does seem to be rolling up hill. I think it has been put down to an optical illusion, although there is talk of it being due to the magnetic pull of Hanging Rock. I prefer the illusion option.

Happy Rolling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 Where to next time??????????????

Yep, I remember that Paul. As a kid, whenever we went that way the family always had a bit of fun with it. The fact it was near Hanging Rock added a bit "spookiness" to it.

I will 100% guarantee you it is an ILLUSION.....
I was there over Easter and the hills next to you appear to be going the opposite way to what they really are which gives the illusion of rolling uphill....

My land metre doesnt lie...............

But still fun for the kids............_____________________________________________

Hi Truckster, Don't know about that one, but there is a place in Forrestfield,WA. that has the same name. "Gravity Hill" We used to go there when it was a dirt track and watch our cars roll backward up it. Could always win a bet with people who hadn't been there before. After they bitumenised it, it wasn't as steep an incline but still good to show people. Always a good laugh on a motorbike, as you look to be facing downhill and bike rolls backwards....weird feeling, sort of throws your balance out. Pouring water on it is another good one. But the old spirit level doesn't lie, optical illusion.
Ciao, Wayne

Bruce,
There is a Magnetic Hill west of Sydney as well... can't remember the area's name,(I haven't lived in Sydney for 17 years) but it was up the Bell Line Road. Very eerie at night particularly as you can't really focus on your surroundings.... even during the day it appears as though your car will roll back up the hill... but I did once check it with a spirit level.... and it is an optical illusion... still a lot of fun though.. especially with gullible people!!! LOL

I was there a couple of years ago. IIRC it's a section of flattish road between two steeper sections. It *appears* to slope slightly one way, but in fact it slopes the other way. As others have said - an optical illusion.

It's in the hills south of Orroroo. See placenames.sa.gov.au for coordinates.

Stephen.

was there in May - maybe it was an illusion - but still intriguing - we actually did seem to move - though the level meter thingy said we were level - very odd sensation - happened going one way but not the other-hmmmm!

Hi Truckster, went there last year and someone must have forgotten to replace the batteries. Not only did we not roll up hill, it doesn't look like you would. The only thing magnetic about it, is that it sucks in the tourists. If you go, take care, it's on an "S" bend and you can get cleaned up.

Hello Truckster,

Magnetic Hill near Black Rock, SA, lies about 20 km from my house. The road surface has created an Optical Illusion and is a fun place to go to. There is a large tin magnet fixed to a fence post. There was an old bicycle attached to it but someone knocked it off. People are so tragic. It lies on the straight section of a S bend but the road isn't made for speeding so there are no worries about traffic and there are warning signs. The illusion works both ways but in a vehicle with a high centre of gravity it may not be so obvious. In an ordinary 2wd it is definitely eerie.

A couple of years ago I was working in the Tourist Info Centre and a lady came in to berate us for false advertsing. She stated that she had tested the magnet and that it had NO 'magnetic qualities' whatsoever. Oh well, you can't please them all.
I will not divulge her place of residence.

I have also been to another Illusion in the hills near Somerset West, South Africa.

Cheers, Willem
Never a dull moment
