Hi. I'm wanting to hear of great
places to see & stay for 2a & 2c (8yr old twin girls) from
Alice Springs to
Darwin. We have a 3.0L Nissan Patrol & 18ft Outback Expanda. We are actually planning to travel from
Adelaide up to
Darwin & then down the WA coast but thought it easier to keep the information to a segment of the trip.
It will be a "working" holiday (my husband is a carpenter/formworker & I do accounting/bookkeeping). I've already received some great info re getting work from
Adelaide to Alice in a previous post but if anyone has anything else to add that would be great.
Can't wait to get the replies .
Leanne

Definitely
camp at the Devil's Marble's A stay at
Daly Waters pub is a must, Cutter Cutter
cave's,
Mataranka thermal springs, Canoe
Katherine Gorge,
Camp at
the Gorge itself, Turn right at
Pine creek and spend a week or more in
Kakadu, Then travel to
Darwin.
While in
Darwin you could do day trips to the Wildlife park or some of the Croc cruises on the
Adelaide river You could spend 48 hrs on a house boat at Corroboree Billabong (
Mary River) and do your own boat cruise.
Leaving
Darwin you could travel through
Litchfield before heading West.
Finding work in
Darwin in the Dry season is to easy, if you can do anything.
Cheers Steve.

Daly Waters pub is a MUST. Never seen my wife laugh so much in her life. ROFLMAO. Make sure Frank is in residence. Tip though if you're vanning it Chook will park you that close to your neighbour that you need to take turns opening your van door. Also hard water so don't wash your hair with ordinary soap. I did and it just about bust my brush trying to get it through my hair.
If tenting or CT go unpowered as there is a mass more room.

Thanks heaps Steve for all that info & especially taking the time to find the links to the
places you recommended. I've already started looking through them & I can't wait to go!
Davoe said to allow about 2 days in
Katherine area. Does this sound about right & what sort of time does everyone think for the other areas between Alice &
Darwin.

Hi Leanne - A few days in the
West Macdonnell Ranges out of Alice is a must do. Also
Rainbow Valley & Ruby Gap (if you can get in with your van). All the suggestions north of Alice you've been given are good also.
Happy Travels
Jason
Ps.
Coral Bay on the West Coast is a must, the kids will love the snorkeling over coral off the beach....fantastic
:-)

Most people I know prefer
Bitter Springs to
Mataranka. Instead of swimming in the concrete
pool you swim in a crystal clear small river and just float along with the flow. Lots of interesting stuff to look at under the water makes it really worth taking mask/goggles. Only a couple of km north of
Mataranka and not far off the main road. There is a camping ground close to the
Bitter Springs reserve area.

Should you decide to do
Bitter Springs, it really is worth having goggles or a mask with you. Little tortoises etc swimming under the water. There are
toilets and changing rooms at
the Springs. It is so close to
Mataranka, you can easily have a look at both then decide where you want to be. Most people have heard of
Mataranka and so don't bother looking at BS. We used to drive Alice/
Darwin regularly and the swim stop at BS was always a highlight of the trip. Because the water there and at
Mataranka is slightly thermally heated, we would take a dip even in the early AM hours in winter in the dark if that was when we were going through..

Gday,
I think Steve covered North of Alice pretty
well in his post.
Around Alice....
Kings Canyon, the Bloody
Rock if you havent done it, Olgas,
Rainbow Valley on your way in and all the lcoal Gorges and Gaps are just day trips from Alice.
If you want to get out a bit Ruby and Glen Annie Gorges are good and Policemans
waterhole (closer to Tennant) is probably the best
waterhole around. ( nearly the only
WATER hole).
Boggy hole used to be great but its about buggered these days, no shade ( the trees are all dead), bugger all water and too publicised.
There is another
waterhole in the area that has survived because a lot of people dont know about it, so I cant tell you about that one..(palm trees, deep cool water, yabbies, shade....)
If you want..become a member and Ill MM you or give me your email address and Ill give you directions to it....but Shhh, dont tell anyone!
Do you want work in Alice?
Cheers

Yes we are happy to get work in Alice. We thought working in
places where there are things to would be a bonus & as you said there are plenty of day trips out of Alice. What sort of work are you referring to (ie for me or Ronnie).
Leanne
PS my email is lbolzon@internode.on.net if you want to send me directions of the "secret waterhole" - it sounds great & I'm sure the girls would love it.

In no particular order:
Devils marbles
Edith Falls
Daly Waters - last time I was there in '05 they were at war with the neighbours across the road - during the day I had parked outside the neighbours and they put their sprinklers on. Then at night they had music blaring until very early in the morning - despite that I'd go back :-)
Mataranka

Territory Wildlife Parks at both
Alice Springs and Berry Springs (just south of
Darwin) are a must for the girls. You might all enjoy a stay at Gemtree, approx 120km NW of Alice - Do a couple of the
fossicking trips on offer there and find some zircons/garnets to become a permanent memento of the trip.
There are lots of jobs in the tourist season, especially if you can turn your hand to cooking/housekeeping, but also
shop work, supermarkets, and
places in caravan parks/motels. Is a good time now to start to line up jobs. Tourist operations in
Kakadu and
Litchfield areas often looking to put on staff soon. A lot of
places just put up notices in their windows - do not advertise in the media because there are so few workers now. You may find something of interest on the Voyages website - they run resorts at
Yulara, Alice,
Kings Canyon,
El Questro, in the areas you are visiting.
