I am hoping to do a trip from Central Coast to Gilgandra,
Walgett,
Lightning Ridge,
Bourke,
Tibooburra, Corner,
Broken Hill,
Wilcannia,
Nyngan,
Orange,
Home in July 08 nice big loop (2 weeks) - but would like to know if towing a non-off road van would bring me undone. I have a 06 Nissan Navara D22 which will make it fine, but now questioning how a 19ft jayco would fair on the roads - especially
Bourke to
Tibooburra (leaving the van here and taking the car only to the corner).
If anyone has done the trip either with a van or by car i would love to hear your opinion on making such a trek with a caravan!

Hi Jayco,
If it has some AT tyres and frontal stone protection, you shouldn't have a problem.

If you are talking about NSW then it is the shires of Wyong and Gosford or alternately the coastal stretch between Lake Macquarie and the Hawkesbury River.
This is just another case of the posters being lazy and not providing enough information for those in other states. In the last few days there are quite a few threads with odd ball names in the title and the thread initiator has not given any indication of where they are in Oz.

hi Jayco
As an interstate truck driver and out there all the time i must say you will have no problems..see them out there all the time, just one word of advice try not to go through
wilcannia after dark or spend much time in town either (nothing to see there) as the "LOCALS" are not friendly at all and just love tourists stopping. If you need fuel while in
Wilcannia go to the B.P truck depot here are directions....... if you are heading west into town turn left after you go over river(
big tree on corner) follow the down about 2-300 meters then turn left small B.P
sign on corner of street you are turning into, this is the saftest place to fuel in town, locals don't normally go that far down.
Just as a matter of intrest to you
Wilcannia is the town the government sent all the trouble makers to ( out of redfern Syd) while the olimpics were on......hope this helps. enjoy your trip
john.

G'day
John
Agree in part. BP distributor was 8c / litre (diesel) cheaper than the servo when we were there. Nothing to see? The streetscape (courthouse etc) on the way to and from the BP distributor is great and is worth a look.
Cheers
John

Hi Jayco
Went to the corner 2 years ago roads should be fine for towing,
Tibooburra to the corner probably the worst the rest was easy might get a bit boggy if it has been wet

You shouldn't have any problems with clearance except after rain and there may be a few washaways at the
creek crossing on the dirt.
Your main problem will be the vibrations on the dirt. Keep your speed down a bit and don't have too much pressure in the tyres on the van and everything in the van should stay in place.

Thanks for all the replies. Especially about
Wilcannia !!
Any other outback towns to stay clear of we should know about ????
This will be our first big touring trip - have done plenty of coastal trips and had no issues, but going outback is a total different experience and plenty of research and reading of everyones past experience comes into play.
Question - Who knows the name of the road between
Bourke and
Tibooburra? I have only come up with route 29 - is there a more formal /informal name?
Question 2 - After replies about
wilcannia - any suggestions getting from
Broken Hill to
Orange in maybe 2 days?

Answer to Q.2....Stay at
Cobar, or better still,
Nyngan, lovely shaded caravan park right on the Bogan River.
Cobar is right near the big truck stop and gets a bit noisy..or maybe
free camp at one of the many rest areas.
Also while your out there don't miss going out to
White Cliffs and spend a night there...
well worth it IMHO.
Cheers from Fred.

Q.1. Hema gives the
Tibooburra to
Wanaaring bit as "MR 405," the flood warning sites just refer to these roads by the town at each end and the travel planners call them "unnamed."
Q.2. If you go down the Barrier and
Mitchell Highways it is 900 km or a little over 9 hours. There is one
rest area between Cabar &
Nyngan that would be OK for an overnight stop. I can't think of anything after that. There are good parks at
Nyngan, Trangie and
Narromine, If you make it to Dubbo I would suggest using the first park you come to - just after the airport.
The shortest route for the trip given by the travel planners roughly follows the rail way line. It is 832 km and driving time of 16 1/2 hours. The 160 km from Ivanhoe to Mt Hope is the smallest of dotted lines on Hema and the travel planners give the driving time as 6 1/2 hours. This could be a good trip if you are after adventure.

Wilcannia is still worth a look, as there is some lovely old buildings there.
We have been through 3 times and found it to be neat and tidy ( apart from the grafitti ), its just a pity that there are so many bars on windows including the 'locals' own homes.
