I bought a 2.8 GQ new in 97. Still have it and love it. A little underpowered off boost. Some have issues with overheating/cracked heads. If you are not towing or have a light trailer you wont have any issues. Cheers Steve

Hi had a 98 GU 2.8 had no dramas with it had it for around 2.5yrs sold it with about 180000kms on it, I got around 20-21mpg average, terrible to take off in first gear hill start but once you got going on H/Way went real well, I then put a motson chip in it different vehicle same fuel economy more black smoke but a lot more power to go with it I do have a dyno sheet for it from Motsons, It was every bit as good if not a TAD better than the standard 3lt patrols which I now own before I put a 2.3/4" exhaust and a DP Chip.
Cheers Lyle

I drive one for work and as the other guys have said - they are hopeless off boost and you have to ride the clutch to start off on a hill and use most of the rev range. They are fine once on the highway or coasting. Otherwise the rest of the vehicle is just like any other Patrol - solid. If you can afford a 4.2L then they are worth it.

"They are fine once on the highway or coasting"

"or coasting"-I like that, very subtle!
