Darkie currently has genuine filters all round and he is due for a service again. Am I better off sticking with the genuine filters or is it worth while using non genuine ones??
If recommending non genuine filters what brand.

Cheers Kev

I use the Valvoline brand. Get them from my Toyota dealer, they use them in the vehicles being serviced there.

Maybe somewhere you asked them to use them. Very hard to believe they would use aftermarket stuff if they had genuine available.

Still waiting for the shoes Kev,
if they don't show up soon I'm gunna find a Clydesdale and pinch the shoes of it. A mate at Inverell could get them for me at short notice but I'd like to use the Co-op store here in Tamworth.
And yes only 77 days to go woooooohooooooooo.

You got your HF done yet. I'm borrowing an NGT from ??????? and getting that fitted. Join VKS of course

Cheers

PS Got some 47 cent "Mess free dog feeders" today for the targets for the casting comp - I'll have to dig up some casting plugs for the contestants though

Kev,
Personally I use the OEM filters, I've found very little price difference between the ones you buy at Repco Coventrys etc to the ones I buy from Nissan. Personal opinion for peace of mind.
Keep the shiny side up

Kev throw away the 1HZ air filter and put in the V8 filter. Much better air flow and takes longer to get grubby as it is quite a bit larger. My Dad (with 1HZ) and myself (1FZ-FE) both run them. They are a bit dearer though. I use Ryco for the air and Valvoline or ryco for the oil and fuel. Myself and a few others around here have had leakage probs with the sakura (spelling) filters and my LPG bloke has had pressure probs with the cooper oil filters.
Having said that most of the aftermarket oil filters except for the ryco seem to be a bit smaller in physical size than the equivalent genuine filter. On an extended trip (usually with a trailer and in extreme conditions) I will only use the larger genuine oil filters.

Signman, I can't remember the part# off hand but I don't think it will fit into a 75 series air filter box. The 100/105's have a much larger air filter box.
Also the 100/105 filter is sealed on one end where as the 75 is open top and bottom.

Sorry to have got your hopes up for a horsepower increase on the 75...LOL

Seller's ID was "iquay". I just did a search and looks like he hasn't any up at the moment. Might be worth messaging him.

But you can get a similar deal from the Toyota dealer in Dalby. $300 for a box of 10 genuine.Link here

Hey Kev

I would go for the genuine article if you only service it over a long period of time EG: a couple of months apart.

I use Sakura for mine I have had no trouble with them, but they cost me $11 each and I service mine ever fortnight, so mine are a throw away job.

hope this helps Steve.

Steve,

I had Darkie serviced in Early January so I will probably use the genuine ones, I don't do as many kms as you do during your tour season.

I have the washable air filter in my 6 cyl petrol cruiser (99 105). How long do these last? I have been cleaning mine periodically, and it still looks in good condition.

And your point is?????????

Using non genuine may be cheaper and better for the vehicle hence the question.

or
Do you have analysed all the non genuine ones to compare to the genuine one?????

Cheers Kev

The point is most OEM filter are about the same price as non OEM ones and in some cases cheaper.

I don't thing anyone would have the equipment or knowledge to analysis the difference of after market filters to OEM unless they had an invested interest in filters.

If some one thinks they can tell a good filter to a not so good one just by looking at it is full of......

How do they know what microns they filter at, I can't tell the difference between a good filter at 30 microns (0.030mm) and a cheaper one at 60 microns (0.060mm) but I do know what would be better for my engine and that 60 microns will damage an engine.

So how do you know is the after market ones are as good or better then the OEM ones?

How much do you think you will save going after market?

I'm not having a dig at you directly but it is a thing I have to deal with day in and day out with customers.

I know you have a Toyota but have a read of this PDF file referring to Nissan Patrol air filters and why they have updated there air filter for that vehicle.

Genuine L/Cruiser filter is washable, $70.00, manual says to replace every 60 months or 100,000km, with regular servicing of filters. Nothing to be gained by me from buying cheap throwaway filters. Also less rubbish thrown into landfill.

My spare parts sell "cooper" brand filters and Been using them for ages. Half the price and no issues. Brought a K&N washable air filter and use a donaldson type pre cleaner. Everything runs like clockwork. (1HZ with DTS Turbo)

Hi Kev, hows things going ?? I, like you know have always used genuine even now I cant get at cost price but still use them. I know the oil filter on the old lux genuine use to have a part inside the oil filter to supposidly stop oil draining from filter when sitting, there fore when starting up it would send oil straight to the top instead of spending time (seconds) filling filter first. I have seen after market filters with the same thing but not all but for the sake of a few extra $$$, if that, Im not willing to chance anything. At least if it goes bang I can say it was not through neglect. Also when I sell a vehicle I have always kept every reciept for the filters from Toyota and I write on it klms, date etc of change and kept them with the log books. Had receipts for the lux from 1989 from the first oil change to the last one at 297000k's in 06 And it was changed every 3 1/2 to 4 thou klms, you can imagine the amount of receipts, even including wiper blade receipts LOL. Probably why I sold it so easy, everyone was asking for proof of oil changes, had every one of them. Regards Steve M
