On our caravan (see Rig Photo) an old Viscount which has had a suspension up grade, two inch solid axle, leaf springs and shocks, we are running (on it when I brought it) a set of Nankang Supper Tripper HTs, 215/70R 15C, 109/107P, load range D. Max load single is 2271 lbs @ 65 psi cold. Side walls 2 ply poly tread 2 ply poly, 2 steal and 1 nylon...OK....the van probably weights around 1200 KGs loaded So my question is are they ok on the gibber roads going into Innamincka from Thargomindah? and what pressure should I run them?
They are near new so really would not want to get new ones. And that size finding an LT 3 ply side wall is a little hard to find so far.
Thanks for an help

Cheers Bruce

If you have any trouble Bruce, I'll be travelling that section on the Tuesday.
My trailer has BFG AT 31 x 10 R15's on it and I'll have around the same weight as you and I will probably run the tyres at 28 - 32 PSI.

77 Days to go LOL

Cheers Kev

Sorry Bruce for interupting, Buuutt I must do it!!

Young Kev, So who was the dim wit official who made such a declaration about our fair state? Did he/she have webbed feet & use hopping as a means of getting from point A to point B ?

& 3-nil ? I can see my new brake controller, a prodidgy was it, being paid for by you!!

Anyway, I wish you a safe trip travelling that section of road on Tuesday, But hope you get a flat or six & maybe even your beer
gets shook up so much it explodes. LOL

Isuzumu

I have absolutely no idea about your tyres but I just loved your rig pics. Not the new ones the oldies of you guys in the swamp or whatever you were trying to cross. The photos of those real 4x4s brought back good memories. Do you mind telling where they were taken or did I miss the bleeding obvious?

Cheers Pop

Hi Pop, we were on our way to Wangi Falls in Litchfield Nat Park in 1980 I think. We had to leave the Patrol over night but next day had it going in about two hours. The Tojo tray back was mine and the guys hanging off it were from the Darwin Suzuki 4X4 Club. It was still a little to deep for the Suzukis so we towed a couple across with my Tojo. I love the one of John ready to swim off the bonnet of the Patrol. On the way back to camp my Tojo decided to give up as well lots of water and we had to walk about five Ks back to camp, the wives were not impressed when we staggered back into camp with out any vehicles.

The tyres themselves should be OK for towing Bruce, but how well do you know Murphy and his bloody law.

In "normal" circumstances you will be OK and could probably do the trip 10 times without issues. At 1200kg the van is not particularly heavy.

The one time you encounter a problem, you will have one spare and depending on the condition of the punctured tyre, you then need to assess if it can be fixed and how. (tyre plugs, tube patches, etc)

Are they tubeless tyres, or do they have tubes?
Perhaps a tyre repair kit, (plugs & patches) and one or two spare tubes will give you that extra confidence.

As for tyre pressure, I would start at 28psi for dirt roads and adjust as required after measuring the pressures when hot and applying the 4psi rule.
If they increase more than 4psi when hot, they are running hot and need more air. Increase by a couple of psi and try again.
If they don't show any noticeable difference when hot, there may be too much pressure and you can drop the pressure by a couple of psi to compensate.

Bill.

Hi Bill, yep I know that guy Murphy, only to well hahahaha. They are tubeless and I have tyre plug kit. 28 to 30 psi sounds the go, I will be taking it very easy have plenty of time to get out there.
Thanks for your input to Kev.
Gee just watching the price of diesel going up, might not make it to the dirt.

Bruce

I would really be looking at two LT tyres and keep the HT for spares.

You are unlikely to find a stronger tyre in that size. Most 215/70R16 only have a load index of 98. Nankang is a reasonable brand.

The tyre is a commercial tyre and Load Range D is equivalent to the old 8 ply rating.

I'd be using them.

Thanks for that Phil, might see if I can get another for a spare. The spare is brand new, so having two spares I will be able to rotate easier as well.

Cheers Bruce.

Thanks all for your go advice..............

Bruce,
If you just want a 2nd hand spare, the tyres on the T30 Xtrails with steel wheels are the same size. its a fairly uncommon size.
