Hi Folks, we are caravaning from Adelaide to Darwin soon and we were wondering if it is worth staying for a couple of weeks in Alice Springs, where to stay and what to see other than the big rock of course. Also is it easy to get some casual work while you are there. Thanks for any help.

The big rock hardly qualifies as "in Alice Springs"... but there is heaps to do in Alice and around that area.

Rainbow Valley
Standley Chasm
Glen Helen
Palm Valley
East and West McD ranges
Todd River social circuit
but honestly there is so much to do that 2 weeks will go before you know it, esp. if you expect to get to Ulura and Kata Tjuta and do some casual work.

Uluru I meant... god help us - someone did the Ulura thing the other day. It must be a disease.

I think you had better check your maps again. The big rock as you call it is not exactly around the corner from Alice Springs.
As to your question, spend at least that time. There is stacks to see in and around the town.
Day trips to both the West and East MacDonnell Ranges have some incredible scenery which don't require a 4WD.( you didn't say if you had one).
In the town lots to see and do, just enjoy.

You might be surprised to know that the Big Rock is 462km from Alice Springs.

There is heaps to see in and around Alice Springs and plenty of work for anyone who wants to work especially in the hospitality industry

Thanks guys for your replies. I do appologies for the flipant comment about the big rock being close to AS but i was only refering to this in light of traveling over 10,000kms on our trip in general. So in light of this i didn't see the big rock as being to far away from AS.

I will be staying in Curtain Srings while visiting the big rock and the olgas, and yes i do have a 4x4 a real one too, its a RA TD VCRDi Rodeo to the max to get me around.

Keep the info coming people i realy apprieciate it, as i am not a man afraid to ask for directions.

Curtin Springs is a great place to stay and as far as I'm concerned far preferable to Yulara resort. Just a point, are you heading through Docker River by any chance? If you are you will need a permit (free) and this permit will get you into the park area to see the Rock and the Olgas. The Olgas (Kata Tjuta) are fantastic and a walk in the Valley of Winds is a must

A visit to the Desert Park at Alice Springs is worthwhile. Has displays of the different desert environments and an excellent nocturnal desert animal feature. Need to allow almost a full day especially if you have kids with you.

How long are you prepared to work in one place? Voyages owns a heap of resorts across Aust. If you go to the Voyages website and find their careers/employment section, it will give you details of a heap of seasonal jobs available, including at Alice Springs, Yulara, Kings Canyon etc. But you usually have to sign on for 3 or 6 months.
