Hi folks,
Can anyone advise me whether i am better to go with a 7 or 15 amp ctek battery charger? It will be used to charge 2/ 800cca calcium batteries which are linked in parallel.
Would 15 amps be too many on a small battery, say 400cca?

Any help would be appreciated.

Don't know about the 15amp Ctek, but the 25amp Ctek starts off only charging with 8amps initially, monitoring the charge and temp of battery and increasing input amps accordingly. As I understand it, sure I will be corrected if necessary. Do a Google on Ctek and look at the recommendation charts.

Curious to know how exactly CTEK monitor temperature of battery? I have CTEK charger and fail to see it working with mine.

The 25 amp ones have a thermal sensor on the positive alligator clip.

The smaller ones don't need it.

Brett,

The CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) rating has nothing to do with a chargers capacity to charge batteries.

I have an XS 7000 CTEK which is rated for any lead acid batteries from 14-225 Ah. It's current output is 7 amps max.

Just means it may take longer to charge multiple batteries.

Depends how long you need it to take to charge your system from flat.

I work on having the ability to charge the 100Ah battery in the camper overnight in a powered site.

What's the capacity of the batteries you are lookgin to charge? Based on the description and assuming they are 12" or N70ZZ size you are looking at about 2 x 83 Ah.

A 7 Ah charger will struggle to charge them overnight if you have used 50% of your overall capacity (more than is probably healthy for calciums) as you are looking at about 14 hours to charge them in the above example. Charging isn't 100% efficient - I worked it out on 83/7 * 1.15 = 13.6hrs. Pretty close on ball park figures.

With the 15 amp charger you are looking at the ability to recharge the same setup in 6.4 hours.

I'd buy the 15 Amp charger.

Thanks for all your replies. I think i will go with the 15 amp as it is required to charge 2 x 95 a/h batteries.

Much appreciated.
