Ralph,

Start by buying a copy of Camps Australia 4 (available in the ExploOz Shop). It is a great guide to free camping and pretty soon pays for itself.

Ralph,

The road from the Barkly Homestead (Tablelands Hwy) is sealed to Cape Crawford and on to Borroloola. The road from near Daly Waters on the Stuart Hwy (the Carpentaria Hwy) is sealed all the way to Borroloola.

The Savannah Way from Mataranka is sealed to Roper Bar and then is dirt and the Savannah Way via Wollogorang is dirt.

Hi Bloosted

We'vw just done the road from Daly Waters to Cape Crawford and then down to Barkly H'way. Couple of good camp spoys along both roads. Road south is pretty rough for about the first 100 km then its okay. Diesel at Cape Crawford was 220 cpl and at Barkly 224.5cpl. Good acmping at Mrrayat Creek ( in he creek), Banka Banka Station;Douglas Hot Springs and Copperfield Dam.
Enjoy the trip - we are so far.

Not sure about a 25foot van into the painted desert area. When we drove in I wasn't noting the road too carefully, but you might want some more advice on this section re the van. Again not sure, but I don't think camping is allowed in the PD area. Someone will be able to check this for you.
If you are going through Mataranka, continue north a couple of km then turn right to Bitter Springs. Only a few km off the main rd. Especially good if you have swimming goggles or mask. Just drift along in the warm water looking at what is underneath in incredibly clear water. We always give that advice to friends in that area and they always say it is one of the great points of the trip.
