Hi
I am looking at a new fridge for my van and have been shown the
DOMETIC 104ltr, RM7401, 529w x 825h, 12v,240v,Gas. I have asked the seller if it is rated for tropical regions and would handle high outback temperatures but cant get a definite answer. has anyone had experience with these fridges or can suggest an alternative that would suit high temp operation. The alternative is to fit a 2 way 12v/240 compresser driven fridge but I am then up for batteries etc.
Thanks Kc

I think you'll find that the RM 2453, RM 2553, and RM 4601 are the only T-rated models (have a look at
http://www.lets-getaway.com/caravanfridges.htm
I wanted a RM2453 for my old van by unfortunately had to go for a RM2350 because it was the largest I could fit through the door!

The info in the link provided by Drew is out of date. There were newer Dometic fridges at the
Sydney show. I think the smallest model that was "T" rated was a 104 litre size. Rather than wade through any dated info on this
forum I suggest you give the Dometic agents in
Brisbane a ring, ask them and then you may be able to report back to this
forum with the up to date models and the climate ratings for each.

How do I tell if info on a sellers site is up to date?

A sellers site is generally correct. The link in Drew's message was a general interest site not a sellers. I have been in touch with the author and he is checking with Dometic. If you want definitive answers on the price and performance go straight to the suppliers site, you then come here for discussion regarding relative performance experiences.

I know that the compressor type of fridge will be about the same price and the extra for batteries and solar is worth the effort.
The absorption type of fridges do not work all that
well in heat and struggle to cope. Even the T rated models have trouble bringing the cabinet temp back down when the door is opened to get the liquid of life out.
The compressor type do it so much easier and they are reliable.
I would go the 12v compressor. And the extra batts and solar also help with lighting and other power requirements.

It will cost around $3,000 to equip your van with solar of sufficient size to run a compressor fridge. This will also add around 100 kg to the loading of your van - weigh it loaded first to see if you have the capacity to carry the extra load. Also make sure the fridge you purchase is a "T" rated one - the European climate ratings also apply to compressor fridges. The only "T" rated Dometic fridges that struggle are those that have not been properly installed - I have never had problems with any of my Dometic fridges and none of them have had additional fans - all have been installed to Dometic's instructions.

RM7401 is a Tropical rated fridge. Needs to be installed and vented to instructions in the manual. Needs 80mm thermo fan installed in top vent.
Waeco CR110 12v compressor is also Tropical rated fridge.

Hi Paul
Can you please direct me to where you found the RM7401 T rated as I have been to the following site (
http://www.caravansplus.com.au)
looking at the specs for this model and they do show it as T rated there. Other models are shown with the T rating but I cant find any mention with this particular model... unless I need glasses. I searched on the Dometic site but couldn't locate this fridge. A web address where you found this info would be greatly appreciated as I am still considering a compressor driven fridge.

go into any caravan sales yard and you will find an RM7401 fitted. Open the fridge door, look for the label around the perimeter of the inside door frame or the cabinet inside and look on the label for CLIMATE CLASS and you will see it is rated T for Tropical. A Tropical rated fridge is good to 43C. You do still need to be careful in operation and opening as an absorption fridge does not have the recovery of a compressor fridge. An ideal thing with an absorption fridge is to have a 30L Waeco which will run perfectly from an 85w panel and put your drinks and lunch things in that.
People that say you dont need a fan dont read the Dometic instructions. Dometic say you need a fan and sell a fan thermo fan kit.
Dometic is the only supplier of 3way or absorption fridges that have a climate class Tropical rated fridge.
