I'm after a large pure sine wave inverter to occasionally run a coffee machine & some power
tools from our old van. My wiring & circuit breaker can handle up to 150A (1800W). Most of the large pure sine wave
inverters seem to be over $1000 which is
well outside my price range!
Have seen this (new) 1200W inverter (
ebay inverter on ebay for $330 incl postage. It seems to have all the right specs (input & output isolated etc). Does this seem a good unit or am i missing something?
Anyone else found good value
inverters of this size?

Hi Drew t
I bought a 1200w inverter off ebay and find that it wont run a 650w angel grinder.I email the place i bought it from and they didn't want to know about it.
I would buy 1 from a
shop that can be demonstrated before you buy.

Probably 1200W "peak" load I would guess, and they would be generous in their specifications - you would need the planets to line up to get that.

Sorry, I should be clearer. The two units may not be the same. Many eBay advertisers would call Drew's unit "2400W invertor"

yes just to clarify .. the one i'm referring to is 1200W continuous (2400 peak)

I have a Jaycar 500 watt sinewave inverter which will run a 600watt angle grinder.
Inverters aint

have a look there. And be certain: You get what you pay for.
Maybe you start drinking tea.

Hi Drew T,
I bought a large ebay chinese inverter for my caravan over a year ago, it lasted an hour of use while we were away before smoke filled the caravan and it was no more. I got it looked at by a local guy near where we were staying at
Alexandra headlands even though it was supposed to have a warranty as we needed it there and then and he found what looked like a smaller inverter inside the larger housing burnt out. He sold me an inverter which I have now and am thrilled with as the plan was to claim the ebay one on warranty and sell it when I got back. Big drama, my numerous emails to this guy in
Sydney went unanswered for 2 months until finally he gave me an address to send the inverter and he said he would then send it back to china for repairs.
Two more months later I received a different looking inverter in place that I sold in the local paper (lucky I thought) The buyer rang me a month later telling me it went up in smoke as
well, so even though I have bought a lot of good things on ebay I don't trust cheap
inverters.

Same deal for me a 300w inverter on ebay up in smoke after 20 mins of use, opened it up and it was fried. No use chasing up overseas I (luckily) got a DSE replacement paid for by the people I was doing the work for using the inverter - nice ppl too

Buy a Presso instead.
Presso Coffee Machine
And spend the change on a cheap 2kVa generator.
You won't run powertools or a coffee machine for very long at 1000W off an inverter. Your wiring probably won't cope and your battery won't for very long.
If your wiring is rated at 150Amps you will find that automotive cable is rated at the current that it can pass continuously without the insulation catching fire. Only problem is at that current you won't get anywhere near 12 volts at the other end of it.
We used to hire 800w MG sets off Tech Rentals that were pure sine and from memory more efficient than most of the other
inverters of the day, though inverter technology has improved since then.
Work out the current draw. It's massive and I'm guessing optomistically that if you use 50% of your battery capacity (which will probably still give it's life span a nudge south) you are looking at about 50-60Ah available storage tops - if it's a 12" deep cycle wet cell then maybe only 40-45Ah. At that level you could run a 1000W load for about 20-25 mins if you could supply the current required while still maintaining about 12volts at the output.
Then you'd have to go for a drive for a few hours to fill the battery back up.

yeah thanks for that geocacher. coffee machine & power
tools are only required for a few minutes when/if required so i'm not too worried about the drain on my AGM. i have used 3B&S (215A) for the inverter circuit so am not too worried about voltage drop (only a couple of metres anyway)
