Hi all,
Time to shoe my newly acquired 2002 Jackaroo. Have read zillions and squillions of posts over the last couple of years and it would appear as though Bridgestone 693/694s seem to be the choice for my situation. (Phew that wording may save me some flames.) I hear that the Aussie made tyres are the pick. Soooooo I need 245/16 for the Jack and my supplier here in Tassie only has 694s available to satisfy this size and origin.
BUT he says they have these newish 694 tyres from Japan called 694 ATLT rated at 113S whereas the Aussie ones are rated 111S.
The Aussie ones will cost $1020 fitted, balanced and aligned. The new Japanese ones will cost $900 fitted, balanced and aligned.
Has anyone used the new Japanese tyres? I would appreciate any constructive comments please. My situation is 70% blacktop and 30% gravel/dirt Tassie highlands roads. Also being capable of launching or retrieving my tinnie in our lakes.

Thanks in advance

There's been a post on 693/694's in the last couple of weeks. Can't remember who posted it, maybe a search would bring it up.

Thanks Graeme,
I have obviously only read zillions and squillions minus 1 notes. Thanks for pointing this out. It covered the new 694.

Thanks

Hi Pete,
so far really impressed. Pulled a mates 26ft Bertram cruiser out of the water yesterday and did it with ease. I expected it to have trouble but just did it. Got the 3.0l diesel auto Equipe model with 109000 on the clock for $17000. Apart from being a bit poofy inside I am happy. Electric everything including folding mirrors and headlight wipers. First fill up though brought me back to earth. $199.27 to fill the tank....... schmittenheisen. (Or words to that effect.)

The heated and folding mirrors ate quite handy actually. I do a lot of 5.30 starts and thats when the heated mirrors are a bonus in the central Tablelands of NSW. The Jack is the only 2nd hand vehicle I have brought that has required no money spent on it in 12 months except for tyres and fluid changes.
Cheers Pete

Nev,

Looking at the Bridgestone Web site, two types of 694 are available.

694-AT (All Terrain) and 694-LT (Light Truck)
I believe the LT tyres may have a thicker sidewall, but couldn't find further detail on their site.

Last time I talked to Bridgestone, I was advised that all 694 series tyres for the Australian market in the 245/70/16 size, were to be made in Australia. No tyres in this size would be imported. As this Australian made tyre was "brand new" at the time, no testing had been done as to longetivity, etc.
I had a difficult time in sourcing a set of 693's as the remaining stock were being "held" in the warehouse for use by the emergency vehicle agencies. I did manage to extract a set in the end, but only after threatening to take my business elsewhere.

I will probably buy the "Aussie made" 694's next time round as I find the Bridgestone tyres wear well and are obtainable at an extremely competative price.

These "new Japanese 694's" have me intrigued indeed.
Any further information would be welcome.

Bill.

G'day Nev, couldnt resist that Jack eh ?. I'm sure you will find it
worth the bucks. Mine is only the common garden type V6 auto
without all the trimmings, but have put 20k on it without a hitch.
Now 108k, 2000 mod. Cant help with tyres, I put 2 BFG a/t on the rear 15k ago, & am still wearing out the rest, including a set of 5 mags I got off Ebay for $400, with good tyres.
cheers...oldbaz.

Hi Oldbaz,
Na couldn't resist the Jack as the price was great. Very happy so far as it seems a good unit. Still I like my '94 Paj GLS too, but the waroffice has said "sell it!" Unfortunately the 4 sale sign keeps falling down and I always seem to be too late for the for sale ads in the Mercury. Did well over 100,000 in it and it will be a sad day for me when some lucky sod buys it.
I will be rapt if the Jack gives me the same service.
Time will tell,

Hi all,
Finally got some Bridgestone 694s. These are the tyres
LT245/70R16 113S D694FZ OWT
They are made in Japan but have a deeper tread than the normal 694s made in Australia as well as being LT rated. I was a bit concerned about the road noise but the supplier Duggans Tyre Service, (a Bridgestone Tyre Centre), said to try them and if I wasn't happy I could take them back within 2 weeks. A bit more expensive but he reckons I should get 10 to 20000km more than the Aussie 694s. Anyway the deal including balancing and front end alignment was $1000. I must say they were a most impressive team to deal with and very helpful. Anyone in Hobart looking for tyres I would thoroughly recommend Duggans in Argyle St.
(No affiliation yah de yah just a happy little vegemite.)
Well I can assure you that on the Jack they were quiet, very impressive. I gave them a bit of stick on one of the old no longer used back country roads near home and they seemed to handle the wet fine.
I will keep you up to speed on how they wear. May not suit some as they have white lettering on the outside, well these ones did did till they were blacked out. lol

Oh boy why is it that I always rock the boat? Ok I was fed up with sales hype and hubris re tyres so I put 4 Triangle Light Trucks on my Jackeroo at $99ea.... so far only 27000km on them but they still have a long way to go. Mind you I dont get to far of the bitumen and I'm not a "Tyre" freak....
But so far I have no complainrts exepting perhaps that because these tyre have a higer pressure in them the ride is a bit harder but that is compensated for by reduced rolling resistance and more KM/Ltr....
