We have a Backtrax camper and are happy with it but we are continually looking for more efficient means to store and "tweak" the set up. 2009 is the beginning of our "newly free" era and we are setting up the camper and our tow vehicle (Maxda BT-50) for extended trips ....only 2 of us now with the kids independent.
The Backtrax (www.backtrax.com.au) has a stainless steel kitchen with a 3-burner stove and sink with no room for cutlery drawers. Does any one have an idea for storing cutlery and kitchen cooking
tools separately so they are readily at hand and take minimal space? I am tired of digging through sharp knives etc in the one container to find a teaspoon on the bottom.
We are also looking for a design for a generator box, suitable for a Honda 2, to attach to the draw bar and if possible to leave the genii in place while working.
I am sure I will ask for extra ideas as I become more serious about the tavel in 2009. So far we have travelled up to 2 hours from home for short stays so my semi haphazard packing has been OK but I need to be more efficient.

You could try canvas/cloth type "tool rolls". They have small pockets for your cutlery utensils and then roll up so they don't take up too much space. Sorry if I haven't described them
well, but I don't know what their proper name is.

You could use a "Mavis Bag". named after the smart lady that invented it. Tea Towel sized rollup bag with slots to suit cutlery. flat plates etc. Made to fold in half & then roll up. Coat hanger
sewn in top, take it out ,hang it up anywhere, simple....oldbaz.

I like to take a few good sharp knives (nothing worse than cutting with a blunt one) so I purchased a half decent set just for
camping. Anyway the best way to carry them was definitely a knife roll! I think
places like king of knives sell them and perhaps everton on line. Otherwise you have those sleeves which seemed more expensive.
In regards to cutlery I keep knives forks & spoons in a bag (my father in law is a upholsterer so it's a 2nd from some storage bags he made for himself), anyway it's similar to a pencil case (just go for ones that aren't so plasticky I guess). And from memory teaspoons and small utensils like the peeler are in another. Bigger utensils like egg flip, bbq tongs etc are in a seperate one. And I think the steak knives are as
well. Yeah we pack enough for 6 people, just in case we have visitors :)
We also have a zipped bag that fits the chopping board, a couple of plates, and a butter knife / pearing knife for the back of the car lunch stops.
All my kitchen gear is in one or two boxes, those pencil case like bags are all labelled with a texta.
Anyway the idea might be worth a though, especially if you're handy with the sewing machine or needle, just get suitable materials and some zips.
I thought of using a cutlery rack (like the ones you insert into your kitchen draw) but I couldn't see a way how it would stay together and also still doesn't fit everything but takes up heaps of space in the box.
I love the look of the Backtrax, a nice compact little camper, may
well be a serious consideration once we're at your stage and get rid of the kids (hmm got about 10-15 years to think about that).

Thanks for the great ideas...I now have several options to consider. The Backtrax is very easy to tow and
park and is under 750 kgs fully loaded, including 62L
water tank. There is no wasted space in the sleeping area and the tropical awning goes up first so
camp can then be set up out of rain or hot sun.

I store cutlery and other kitchen cooking utensils. plates and mugs in a "Pelican" case. They are expensive but worth it. They are totally sealed from any form of contamination.
I experienced one trip where bulldust got into everything that was stored in the off-road trailer, including the container used for Kitchen stuff. (I hate grit in my mouth)
We also have a "Picnic bag" with extra plates, beakers, knives & forks, etc. which is OK for the Camper we now have, as it is better sealed.
The Pelican© case "lives" under the
camp table when set up for
camping and can be covered in dust,
water, or whatever else may be blown or spilled on it, but nothing gets in.
The case has internal dividers to seperate the sharper items from the other contents.
Bill.

Thanks Bill. I checked out the pelican cases and they offer many options which would suit our
camping on Fraser Island where items must be
dingo proof. Luckily the Backtyrax is
well sealed.
