Good morning every one
The sun is shining and all is
well with the world...
well it would be if my PC did what it is suppose to.
I am doing an external course with charles
darwin uni. A week ago I did about 7 hrs work and saved it.
Went to continue a few days later and the work was not there.
Re- did it.
Yesterday same thing, only four hrs lost.
Has anyone come across this problem and more to the point found a solution.
Regards Bob

Hi Boo Boo
Did you just save ,or save as .Always save as with a file name either to desk top or some other file in my doc.
Have you checked my recent Documents in Start.
You doc should be there if you save it,just restore it & SAVE AS a file name.
If this does not help I believe you have a problem with you computer.
I hope this helps.

Unless u have told it otherwise it should save to "my documents" folder by default. Look in there for the first few words of each document

I just check 'my docs' not in there.

I only 'saved' it as it was an existing file i had open.
Basically i am doing nothing different than what i have done for years.
If it is a new file I 'save as' and give it a name. If its a file already named I just 'save the additional info.
I am almost inclined to think the computer is sick, and I do have a virus checker on it.
Just about ready to see if it can fly.
Thanks for the advice.
Regards Bob

Hi Boo Boo, I have experienced similar problems when gremlins in my computer became ugly. Have you tried a search for the file using the search function? In my case the computer was saving files to a very strange location but I did manage to locate them using the search function and then move them to desk top.How old is your computer? Oz doc

You could try a search through Windows explorer
All files are in there except some hidden files

not if you go to 'folder options' and click on 'show hidden files'.

Hi Bob,
The chances are it's there somewhere on your computer. If Windows wasn't able to save the file, it would tell you so. (usually because of a lack of room)
Is it a Word document?
You can set Word to autosave every 10 mins, or any other interval you specify.
The file search function is the best way of finding your file.
You can search on a portion of the file name, or all *.doc extensions (for word files) and the result will display all documents on the system.
Bill.

There is a joke about a newly married couple going home in a horse and buggy and the horse plays up and the husband says thats three times and shoots the horse. The wife says thats not very nice don't ever do that again... the husband says thats once.....my computer might share the same fate.

Do not despair. Do a search as specified above. It will be somewhere on your computer unless you have a virus.
When I was doing Uni stuff I had a horror of this happening to me, so I saved it in several
places.
Try losing an entire thesis...

I'm with Sandman
its most likely on your computer packed neatly away in some non related folder and/or some non related directory...have done it my self.... many times
do a search for content...use a word that will most likely NOT be in any other file.....

Thats what found it! I used three words I knew were not in any other doc. The funny part is that iIhad already done a search using the title of the assignment.
For the next week or so iIwill print out the work I have saved until I am sure every thing works as it should.

Try this
my computer/c:/documents and settings/(your user folder)/recent
Will open up links to all recent documents including those that have done the vanish. Have recovered many a uni assignment after the blue screen of death this way.
If you cant see the 'recent' folder go to tools/folder options/view/ and select 'view hidden files'
Failing that 'if in doubt, print it out' Makes ideal punishment for a grounded teenager typing it all back in. (usually quicker too)

I think I will print out before I close in future.
I went in through tools/folder/view but couldn't find it.
If its still on the computer its hidden very
well.

What program did u write it with. If its Word open it and then go open in the r/hand side It will then show you the documents you have done. It must be there somewhere as It didnt say it hasnt saved it must be. Also look in C/program files/ ??the progam??/ and lookin all the folders in there, some programs do this by default

If you know the date that you saved it do a search a few days before and after that date. You should find it that way if is was saved to your HD. Good luck. Just a tip, with work that has taken a long time to compile and is of significant value, it always pays to save it to another medium. Why not buy yourself a small Flah Drive. !gb is less than $20.00 that way you will always have a backup.

Hey! Boo Boo,
I knew you would:-)
It's just a matter of computer literacy, which you gain with experiences such as this.
Well done Bob.

I've had a similar problemfor some years now. Especially in my garage. Nothing is ever where I put it ! I put a screwdriver or spanner down, do something else for a few moments, and lo and behold it disappears. Turns up hours later in a totally different place. Same thing happens with cups of coffee and cans of beer. In fact SWMBO bought a bottle of hair dye recently, and that's gone too. The older I get, the better I used to be. Cheers.

It was a Word doc and I had opened my external HD and opened a doc in there, then worked on it and every ten minutes or so I would hit the save icon as I have done for years.
When I had has enough I saved and closed.
Next day I went into the same doc but the new work had gone.
Found it in the hard drive of the computer itself.
Only it took a couple of searches,,, the fussy bugger.
