A group of us are heading out in a couple of weeks. the trip leader has indicated 240lt of diesel should be carried. From my reading some say 160 to 300 lt. anyone know the latest conditions and any accurate advice would be appreciated.
We are going in a variety of vehicles 4/6 cylinder diesels and travelling from Mt Dare to Birdsville.

regards peter

Depends on the distance you are to travel

My GQ 4.2 diesel normally runs around 14/100 normal driving. Hook the trailer on and it shoots up to 18/100. Normal bush tracks with the trailer on I get 20/100.

On my recent offtrack excursion into the Great Sandy Desert and a lot of Low Range driving with trailer in tow I managed 28/100.

There may be a lot of soft sand on the Madigan as it is mostly trackless country. If the trip leader suggests 240lt for 6 cylinder vehicles then he should be in the know. You may use a lot less with a 4 cyl but it is always good to err on the side of caution.

Cheers

We've done it in 2004 and 2006. Sand was much softer in 2006, but that mainly affected the tougher dunes either side of the Colson Track.
In 2004, we went from Alice to Birdsville. Fuel used varied from 180litres (Prado TD) to 215litres (two normally aspirated 1Hz landcruisers) to 240 litres for two 1Hz with aftermarket TD.
In 2006 we went Mt Dare to Birdsville and usage was only about 20-30 litres less. I'm not someone who likes to run close to the wind on fuel, so I always take a bit extra in case there are any dramas.

Last year consumption on our Madigan crossing varied from 15l/100km (4cyl turbo diesel Jeep), 3l GU turbo Patrol 21l/100, 79 turbo traytop 18l/100km and the Humvee 24l/100km.
This year friends that did last month used from 160l in a 80 turbo, to just under 200l turbo troopy. We took 11 days to do the trip, Mt Dare to Birdsville.
There has been rain since they did it last month so conditions will change yet again.
We all carried around 270 litres each and the 3 litre Patrol got to Birdsville with less than 20 litres left.
The lead vehicle will use more as they are establishing the track, all vehicles in the group should take turns to lead to even out consumption.
240 lt would the minimum to carry, the 4cyl vehicles often work much harder in soft going, the Jeep's consumption nearly doubled from road mileage while the bigger engined vehicles only increased by 50-60%.
