What's the weather like up around
Stockton now? Is it a good time for a stay there? Where are some good
places to
camp? I have an off road, hard floor camper. If on your own, what recovery gear recommended? Never been there at all. Do you need maps, permits? Can you take dogs? I have to drop my daughter up in that general region and thought I'd take a look.

Weather is currently raining and we've had rain for the last 2 weeks. I believe it is
clearing up though.
You do need a permit, I think National Parks are currently administering these, but dogs are allowed if on a lead. Probably best to check on dogs though to make sure.
The National Parks number for
Nelson Bay is 02 4984 8200.
Entry to
the beach is either from Lavis Lane at Williamtown or from Anna Bay.

Have a look here for the permit required. If coming from
Sydney the best place to get your permit is the Metro Service Station at the Corner of
Nelson Bay Road and Lavis Lane or the
Mobil at Sal;t Ash.. With your camper I would recommend you then keep heading North and use the Birubi entrance to
the beach (Just follow the signs to Anna Bay and when you get there you will see
the beach entry on the right just after you go over the speed bump). The Lavis Lane entry can get very chopped up and be unsuitable for towing and then if you take that way, even after you get through the entry, you still have to cross a number of very soft dunes to get to
the beach. I go down to 18 psi with my Prado when on
the beach, in the dunes you may even find the need to go a bit lower. As far as
camping on
the beach is concerned, I've never done it. Too close to home. But people seem to
camp almost the full length of
the beach, usually just in behind the first dune. But be aware the wind can really get up.

Permits are now $10 and covers you for three days. Yearly ones are available if needed. Regards Steve M

Thanks for the replies. I think I might get a set of those Maxtrax as we'll only have the one vehicle.

It would be a strange day on
Stockton when no other cars come along, I have found that most folk will give you a hand if called upon to do so.
In fact I recovered a lengthened troopy bus up there once, a local tour operator with no recovery gear of any sort, crazy stuff, 12 passengers and no means of recovery. He was sooooo embarrassed.

He may have been embarassed but he would would have had to wait for someone else if I had been there. It is a fact of life on the dunes that you can get stuck. No matter your skill level or the quality of your vehicle you can always run into a super soft spot that just swallows you up. I had that experience a few years ago. Had all my own recovery gear but the more I dug the deeper I sunk. The first vehicle along was one of the tour operators. I offered my own snatch strap, would have taken him less than a minute to get me out. "Sorry mate - company policy - we are not allowed to help." And off he went with his load of Asian tourists who, I am sure would have got a buzz out of being involved in a real life rescue. The next guy along, in an old 4 cylinder Pajero hooked me up and away we went. Over the years I have helped a number of people on
the beach. It is surprising how many of them actually drive out when they lower their tyres to an appropriate pressure. It seems it takes too long for some of them to go down to 18psi, you'd be surprised the number of them who think that 26 is low enough.

HI there - do you have a GPS ? i can give you some co ordinates of the spots i stay - I enter via anna bay - I have a Jayco Flamingo ( the largest of the pop top range ) and i have very little trouble getting in and out - ( towing with 4.2TDI Nissan patrol -
If you go up the back into the large dunes you may need recovery gear or a second vehicle as the wind blows all the dry sand around and when it gathers a few feet deep - its soft as ...
I am up there all the time - if you need to chat to me -- you can via MSN name Boc1971 or email boc1971@hotmail.com

I bought myself a pair of Maxtrax today. Have other stuff like snatch strap, shackles, etc. Not sure where I'm going yet, just want ideas.
Will you be out there next week? I'll have my UHF on whatever channel you use if that's OK. Might hear you and make contact.
