Hilux tyres and Tanamai

I am about to take delivery of a Hilux for a trip to WA via the Tanamai track. Apart from the odd unsealed road here and there, that will be the extent of my dirt driving. Assuming it is dry, will the standard tyres, 255/70 R15C, be adequate?
Thanks Bill

I've done the Tanami a few times .. it's just a wide dirt highway that is generally well graded. Heaps of 2WD cars do it all the time. So your Hilux tyres will be more than adequate. Still a chance of punctures though so I would be more concerned with having a good puncture repair kit such as plugs, & air compressor (ie: in addition to your spare tyre)

some tyre places will give you a decent trade in price on brand new tyres.
Could be worth looking at swapping them straightaway as there are much better tyres available than the factory ones

I would replace them, the standard tyres fitted to the Hilux are road orientated and are CR&P for dirt but fantastic for black top.

I would look at getting 16 inch aftermarket steel rims and fit 245/75 X 16 all terrain tyres in Bridgestome, BF Goodridge, Coopers, and a few others.

The advantage of going to the 245/75 X 16's is you get an extra 35mm of ground clearance.

We have 6 ply light truck versions of Cooper ATR's on our 15 inch rims for everyday and some 4 wheel driving and when we go away off road we use 10 ply light truck versions of Cooper ST/C in the 245/75 X 16 size on aftermarket steel rims.

I would suggest looking into get a 2 inch suspension lift as well, the front is very low.

DON'T USE THE FACTORY TYRES, YOU WILL BE SORRY.

Regards Richard

Coopers are hopeless on Gibber tracks.

Nah!,

Wear the existing ones out first if they have plenty of rubber.

I don't believe it's cost effective to buy a set of AT's or other "off road" tyres, for one trip across the Tanami.

i have a hilux with the standard tyres and carry a slide on camper which brings the weight up close to the gvm. have done thousands of kms on dirt roads and off road including flinders and gawler ranges and never had a problem with the tyres, i actually think they have performed very well. one thing though they are not particularly good on slippery wet dirt roads so extra vigilance is needed.

That why your tyres are better then the standard ones fitted to SR5's, the tyres fitted to the SR5 are road going tyres only.

The standard tyres fitted to SR's are and off road tyre.

LOL done 97,000ks with original Road Grippers including lots of dirt, sand and some gibber. LT tyres will handle most conditions except mud.

The tyres on the SR are HT , highway terrain, they are not all terrain. What is the designation of the SR5 tyres?

I thought the SR's had more of an off road tyre but I might be wrong, haven't paid much attention to them.

Seeing we have a SR5 the original tyres fitted are HT on the 15 inch rims, isn't it funny the new TRD version of the Hilux has better tyres for off roading then the SR5 and SR..they fir Dunlop AT3's to them.

Thank you all very much for your input, I will stay with the factory tyres for now and then put something better on later.
