If your check engine light is on and you suspect it is faulty try the following:

Turn off motor
Turn key to on
Disconnect positive lead
Earth the positive lead to metal near battery
Reconnect lead
Turn on motor

It drains accumulated eltricity from &^&%^ in computer and clears it. If light comes on again then you have a problem but if it stays off (happens a lot) problem is over

It would be a much smarter idea to find out why the engine light came on in the first place and fix that problem before it becomes terminal

dont need to disconnect battery, just pull the pink fuseable link in the underbonnet fuse box, give it a few minutes and re-install. Make sure its all switched off though.

This completely re-sets ecu to factory settings and often helps out with economy as well on the jacks.

Was always told to disconnect the battery and pump the brake pedal a dozen times to use up any stored power. I used this method just the other day on a small car that had been jump started and would not run properly even after the battery was fully charged. I also left the battery disconnected for 10 minutes. The car has been running fine since.

A couple of points chaps.

Disconnecting the battery will also erase the security code for the radio, requiring it to be reentered before the radio will work.
You should be able to pull the ECU fuse (for about 1/2 hour) to erase its memory.

I have had a couple of occasions where the check engine light has been flashing.
The first time was a faulty contact of the O2 sensor (underneath the washer bottle from memory) caused by mud buildup.

On another occasion I had an intermittent flashing status light which was eventually "fixed" by turning the air conditioner button off for a while, then back on. (This was a weird one, but has not recurred)

A flashing status light is not "critical" and the vehicle can still be driven, but the owners manual states you should have your GM dealer check it out as soon as possible. (The O2 sensor problem occured when I was half way along the Coongie Lakes track, which was some distance from any GM dealership)
Dealer identified the problem and fixed, some three weeks later.

If the indicator light is on solid however, the vehicle should not be driven. (according to the manual)
